  • View Counts – Two Updates

We got some great feedback on View Counts, so we made a few changes right away:

    • Views on your own site no longer get counted - Some of you pointed out that it’s weird for your own views to count.  Good point – now if you’re signed in and looking at your own weblog entries, those hits will no longer count toward your total views.

    • Ability to hide the view counts – if the new view counts aren’t your thing, you can actually hide them pretty easily. Here’s how to hide them:

    XANGA THEMES

If you’re using the new Xanga Themes system, here are the steps to hide your view counts:

    1) Sign in, click “edit theme” and then click the “Remix Theme” option:

    2) click the “css” option…

and paste in the following “Custom CSS”:

    .itemviews {display: none !important;}

    3) click “save” and your view counts should disappear!

    XANGA “LOOK & FEEL”

If you’re using the xanga “look & feel” system, just sign in, click to edit your look & feel, and paste the following code into your “Custom Header” area:

    <style type=”text/css”>
    .itemviews {display: none !important;}
    </style>

That should do it – your view counts should now be hidden.  Hope that helps!

  • I love you guys and all the work that you do to make our experience better.Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • AWESOMEAGE!!!!!!!!! u guys are doing an KICK ASS JOB!!!  one thing tho.. i did choose to hide my views however I think it’ll be cool if you can still “view” ur “views” if u kno wat i mean…

Maybe add another link in the feedback log??? that would def be AWESOME for those (me) who want to hide views from the public but want to be able to see how many hits we get :D

    keep up the fabulous work!!!!!

  • Great! Love that it’s so easy to turn it off if we want!

  • @babiegrl8069 - You should be able to see views in your feedback log – as footprints?  We’re using the same data to power both sets of numbahs…

  • Thanks for the option!

  • Oh yes…thank you for this! That will help my complex that I’ve developed.

    Have a great day!

  • Another AWESOME! moment by the Xanga team…(and I mean it without any sarcasm whatsoever)…
    Blessings….keep it up.

  • Xanga team/Xanga can I keep you?

  • I’m not a big fan of seeing my own views, so…

[I'm using the look & feel system] what if I already have a custom header thing for my site… I can only either hide the views and get rid of the custom header I have, or have the custom header and see my own views. Is there a way to have both my old custom header and turn off the views??

  • I like that feature. Thanks for trying to find new ways to help us. You are really appreciated. Great job!

  • that’s awesome… thanks!

  • more awesomeness!

  • bananas in pajamas

  • I tried to ask this question earlier and got no response.

How do I add a counter to my site…like a general counter like I had before I switched to themes?

  • useful.  thank you

  • @lyricsninja - are walking down the stairs…

  • @five11nation - and chasing teddy bears?

  • You guys are something else...that was quick*…my old ones..about 2 years back have not ‘caught’ up yet…? I hope you all have a great day and weekend too…take care all..hugs, Lee minis Eugenia..minis..*

  • I still don’t see how I can have so many hits but not near that many on foot prints or my tracker.  How can that be?  I have it set so only signed in xangans with foot prints enabled can see my site.  This freaks me out big time!!  I like to know who is visiting my site.

  • Not that this has anything to do with this, but I would really like to be able to merge my xanga and my datingish usernames so I can keep my xanga true status but still update on datingish. Thanks!

  • I’m liking this new improvement.

  • This is great :) Thanks for the option to turn off the page views.

  • thanks for your commitment!

  • I can see the view counts in a good way.
It’s good to see that others view.

Some dont’t want to see the view counts on their sites.
    Thanks for the options.

I see that future posts have views too.
I have seen some of my future post having more than one view.

They have not been made public yet.
How can those future post been viewed?

  • Dear Xa and other interested bloggers:

Xa has made some changes, but is still not being completely upfront and honest to any of us…

How can you tell Xa ‘how wonderful’ they are when you don’t know what they’re doing or why?

Have we given up all rights to privacy by using your site?

You’ve addressed the turn off feature, now would you address the second paragraph under the heading 10 commandments?   “what you are using their data for and how you are accessing their data.”

    Is it true
that you are still collecting data even if we turn off ‘views’?  Then
it doesn’t make any difference whether they’re turned off of not?

    And, #3) below:
But now it turns out that Beacon tells Facebook what you are doing whether or not you are logged in to Facebook, and whether or not you
    have approved any data sharing

(two of my comments left on Xa team’s last post):

The 10 Commandments of the Social Web

    <li id=”1443313569″ class=”item item-24 item-even”>

    http://www.socialtimes.com/2008/07/social-web/

    8. Thou shalt be absolutely transparent with users

Preparing to release a new feature that will track all of a user’s
activities around the web (does the name “Beacon” ring any bells)? You
might want to make sure all of your users understand the implications
of the new feature and provide them with the ability to use it or not
    use it.
As the social web becomes more integrated, the sharing of
information across sites will begin to push the limits of user privacy
and keeping users in the dark won’t work.

Be transparent with your users about what you are using their data
for and how you are accessing their data.
    If you aren’t somebody will
figure it out and release that information to the world. It sounds
better coming from the company’s mouth than somebody else.  (I added bolds)

Good idea Xa – anyone listening there?

Or – anyone else who can figure this out – let me know, please.

    3)
    http://venturebeat.com/2007/12/01/beacon-also-facebooks-behind-the-scenes-web-data-tracker/

~ here’s some freaky stuff about Facebook and Beacon

The popular social network suffered a revolt against the feature, because it sends messages to your friends about your purchase and other online behavior, and did so without your approval.

But now it turns out that Beacon tells Facebook what you are doing
whether or not you are logged in to Facebook, and whether or not you
have approved any data sharing, according to an independent report
by a security analyst at IT company CA. (See example screenshot). In
other words, while your behavior isn’t shared with your friends, its
collected by Facebook nonetheless — and this is something you won’t
    have explicitly approved.

The report supports the findings of another technical report
from this past week which describes the hidden data-sharing aspect of
Beacon, but in less detail (we noted the secret data-tracking aspect here).

  • Thanks. I wasn’t really feeling the view counts.

  • you guys are amazing!  keep up the great work!

  • Thank you for the quick updates.

  • Yet another reason why I am a fan of xanga. You’re always on top of the members.

  • @fallingfallingfallen - I’m right there with ya.  I must either be unbelievably stupid, using my “Look & Feel” (unthemed) system, or it’s not a good fix for those of us without themed sites.  In either case, I have a site name (which I want to keep) and a tagline (an imood icon), which I want to keep too.  Must I replace one of these and lose it?  I pasted the code AFTER the site name in the site name box, previewed it, and nothing had changed.  Am I doing it wrong, or must I replace my site name to eliminate the views thingie?  John, care to weigh in here on this one more time?

    Thanks!

  • Once again thanks.

  • HELLO????  Anybody there from Xa?

    What are you tracking?

Why won’t you respond to me?

Why won’t you tell members even if they turn off ‘views’ – you’re still tracking them?

Does your tracking include internet usage of other sites – besides on Xanga - as was/is being done on Facebook/and/or other social sites?

And why did someone just comment that parts of my post are cut off from their view?

I do agree with his comment – (my emphasis)  THIS IS BS!!!

how can anyone think this is a good thing????????

  • @fallingfallingfallen - I have the same question – did you get any answer for this? I have looked at my “custom header area” four times and I have no idea where I’m s’posed to add the code… without losing the rest of my header, that is.

  • @underused - nope, didn’t get a reply yet… I know where to add the code and it works to get rid of the views… but it also gets rid of my header thing too. so.. yep… still waiting for an answer…

  •  GRACIAS con todo mi corazon

    (thanks with all my heart)

    ~~JEN

  • Thanks!  I am glad to get Views off.

@fallingfallingfallen - You can have both if you add the code to where you would put in your own HTML  Just click on the “Input your own Header HTML” and tada.  :)

  • ahh thanks! this is good. imma do that now.

  • @cwjphotos - …but then what I originally had as the header is just plain text at the top of my page… I want it to look the same as it did… perhaps I’m just not HTML savvy enough to figure out how to do so…

  • And the “view” function is useless!~

  • Great~~
Thank you so much for your quick response~~ ^^

  • @Journaling_Susan - This happens to me, too. The second I posted a private entry today, it showed that it had one view. I hadn’t even viewed it yet, and obviously no one else had, either.

  • i inputted the code into the “Input your own HTML” under the header section and the views don’t show on my public site… but other xangans who are subscribed to me can still see the my views when they look through their subs pages… did i do this correctly?

  • Instead of all the codes, why not just add an option in Account Info? Then we can just click Yes, or No. Way simpler.

  • This isn’t working right, is it? I just tried viewing a post I just wrote and it says 1 view; but I set it to private so the only viewer must be myself.

  • So, to get rid of it I have to get rid of a custom header?

Sounds like xanga business as usual, punishing us for 1. not wanting a new and totally pointless feature and 2. not switching over to themes and still using the “look and feel” system.

Wow, the craziest part is I am actually surprised!  You stay classy, Xanga!

(and thanks again for the ads on my SIR page!  I LOVE having them ON TOP of paying for premium!)

  • woo-hoo!!! thanks Xanga!!!!

  • @LibraryPrincess - no, you don’t have to get rid of your custom header. you just stick the code inside your style block (i’m sure you have one if you have a custom header). i just tried it so i’m pretty sure this works.

  • hehehe. goodie.

  • how to post songs ?

  • Good job you guys! Yeah.. that’s awesome. I’m so happy to know that my voice is heard on Xanga. :) Definitely better than most governments. :) Good job. This deserves a mini.

  • Great job Xanga team!

  • I’d like to point out some old gripe I still have with the themes system:
the options for font size are very limited and slightly confusing, e.g. setting different values for “page” and “module contents” yield different results.
I’d really like to be able to tweak the font size in precise pts instead of small, large, x-large etc. also, the font size on pages gets “influenced” by mozilla firefox’s default font size setting.

hope this can get sorted out, thanks!

  • YAY. I was confused and stuff.

  • @kingofblur - That would be a great idea.  They’ve done it with other things.

  • @fallingfallingfallen - I remember a smidge of HTML from when I used to type up my own code for a website I had.  It takes time, but I know there are simple how to pages if you want to try it.

Like someone mentioned it would be nice if we could just click a Yes or No in our account info.

  • Excellent improvement, thanks!

  • I use Look and Feel and still don’t understand how/where I can add the code. I agree a yes/no option in another place would be simpler…Would appreciate help from anyone out there who was able to successfully turn off view counts in Look and Feel. Thanks.

  • but what happens if you disable comments, that means you cant enter the comment page right? but you still get views? i dont get it lol :S

  • Good job, guys.

Call me ‘old skool’ or ‘old fashioned’, but I prefer the Look & Feel System to the Xanga Themed System for these reasons below :

    (1) I could easily insert html codes for trackers, chatbox, song widgets and also background images of my own design.

    (2) Setting up a themed site is way too complicated. Plus the theme itself often messes up our trackers html codes, leaving our sites vulnerable to spammers and hackers.

Personally, I prefer to leave the view counter on in my site. Any sudden flunctuation in numbers will help me to determine if I have a spammer or a hacker jacking up my site. Or just a lovesick secret admirer.

  • yaayyy =)! you guys are super quick! i was just thinking how odd it was that my weblog view counter number goes up as i view it, even though it’s mine lol.

aaand i like the privacy option you gave lol.

    thank you!

  • Since viewing out own pages doesn’t count towards our page views,
shouldn’t our comments not count as well. If I’m replying to someone’s
comments on my blog entry, I don’t want it to count as a new comment!!

  • Great! I gotta hide it now.

  • Will we be able to see who viewed our page?

  • Thank you for allowing us to turn off the views on our weblog page.  Can you develop a way to turn off being able to see how many views my weblog has from the home page?  While looking at my home page (where the universal inbox is) it still is showing the views and I would rather it not.  Thanks!  If I want to see who has been on my site I just look at my footprints.

  • I like the view counts. Thanks

  • i came from vacation and just saw the viewcounts on my site now. i love it! thanks so much xanga! luv u guys forever! cheers!

  • xanga needs some kind of im thing to connect with other users, messaging is great and all, but can we get a built in talking method?

  • yay glad you made view count invisible! : ) thanks

  • Sorry for recommenting, but the code you gave doesn’t hide the view count. : (

  • im kinda late posting a request, but i think it would also be really nice to see WHO the viewers are, that should go with the count too don’t u think??? just a thought :)

  • I was wondering where I was getting those extra views. Thanks for fixing a problem I didn’t notice at first guys!

  • um. hi. thank you for FINALLY posting an answer on how to hide views (btw, it’s a pain in the neck to do–i don’t see why you just don’t have a button where you can just turn it off). but anyway, i don’t want to see views, PERIOD. i don’t want to see them at all. how do i get rid of them off of my private page??

also, i’ve tried to change my language to ENGLISH numerous times, but it keeps bumping me back to chinese, even though i don’t speak/read/write chinese. i’ve written in the past about it, but i didn’t really receive any help. you need to fix that. i reset my language EVERY DAY. that is ANNOYING.

your troubleshooting sucks. maybe you should concentrate on fixing the little kinks in your system before adding stupid, worthless features that you don’t give options to turn off.

  • I just got back on xanga aftre a year, but I want to get off the themes version it forced me on and back to the olde look and feel version so I can customise again

    thanx

  • Heya – don’t mean to be dense… But I honestly can’t figure out how to put the code in my “custom header” without taking out my custom header.
    Can you help with that?
I’m hoping it’s not something obvious. If so, my apologies.
    g.

  • It would be awesome if you guys added a feature to organize audio so we could make playlists on xanga + create directories instead of using third party sites.

  • i don’t even know if this is possible, but thought i’d suggest it anyway.  when i view my blog and it says i have xxx hits, it’d be great if i could click on that number and view those footprints.  then i could track if i’m getting hits to any of my older blogs, etc.   just a thought.  :)   keep up the great work!

  • Um, this has nothing to do with this, but is there an easier way to get more credits without that survey thing? Well better yet, how can people get so many credits to change their username? It’d be easeir to make a new site, but not everyone wishes to do that =/

  • i don’t know if i’m commenting the right place, or who reads this. but fck_icytequilas_n_toxicatedd is a huge hater, if you could please do something about it- thank you.

  • hi, Guys, you’ve done a great job!  However, would like to ask if I click the ’2 views’, can I know who did view the blog entry?  Also, about the footprint…..would it be possible to which entries did my friends view or even who read the comments from my friends?  can it log the duration they read i.e. read the blog for 15 mins, read the comments for 10 mins?

I think I am too greedy…..anyway, thanks for adding new features in.

  • xanga team,

you need the ability to DISABLE view counts, not hide them.

Even if I manually hide the viewcounts through either of the two options you suggested, it will still show the viewcounts through “subscriptions”. For example, if I subscribe to user “BLAHBLAH”, and BLAHBLAH has his/her viewcounts hidden, then I can simply click on “subscriptions”, and still be able to view his/her viewcounts.

If anyone else has figured out a way to disable this function, please let me know.

  • You guys are so wonderful. :)

  • stop by & subscribe to my site to help me reach my credit & sub goal. comment me with minis cuz i’ll get more credits =]

I have a lot of content on my site and i’ll be adding more once i get my credit & comment goal.

dont forget to vote in the poll =]

    &hearts;Jasmin

  • Please help me ASAP.

I keep getting spammed by this girl/guy, whoever. It was just rude comments at first and now it’s getting to be about ME personally.

Please have this person like, removed or something. No matter how many times I block the site she makes another.

    It’s gotta stop.

  • Thanks for the options; it’s appreciated that you folks take our feedback into account.

  • Thanks I was wondering how can I get rid of that

  • um i have a problem…..mi look&feel HTL is not showing up to put a layout plz help me i ned help asap!

    -bambi

  • I don’t know how to get the look and feel system. I somehow only have the “theme” option which for my intents and purposes is useless. How can I get to the look and feel options?

  • That is a good change in the views. What is the difference between views and footprints? Judi

  • @QueenMeadow - I’ll try to remember without going through the steps myself.  I use L&F.  Go to your universal inbox and on the left is says Edit Theme.  Click on that.  Then near the top is a thing that says something about your active theme.  Uncheck that and then I think it is the Edit button you click on and then you should be on your way.
    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks!  These are just the two changes I was hoping to see.

  • i noticed this and thought it was an awsome idea… nice job!!!!!!!

  • oh man. you guys rock.

  • Thanks guys for being so awesome!

  • Awesome possum! Thanks Xanga Team!

  • HI I WAS WONDERING IF THERES LIKE A CODE OR ANYWAY I CAN GET RID OF THOSE NEW ANNOYING AND REALLY OBNOXIOUS ADS OFF MY SITE WITHOUT HAVING TO GO PREMIUM ?

  • My view counts don’t match my footprints.  This baffles me, and I can’t seem to find an explanation. (It says 19 views, but only 4 footprints, 2 of which were people leaving comments).

  • The whole “don’t update view count for your own weblogs” is understandable.  I double-checked it and it works.  But I found that I’m able to increment the view count for PHOTOS by refreshing the page.  Shouldn’t those be not counted also?  I guess that goes for everything, really…

  • If hits will no longer count toward your total views, why even my private entries have 1 view?

  • please help xanga team! i hate a hater. her site is xanga.com/sunnybellavogue. she is pretending to be me and saying that i’m a fake.

  • Thank you so much for making them hideable!!

  • Thanks! Xanga is so much better now than it was in 2005! I like it better than Myspace. ^^

  • Thank you Xanga team :)

  • who are you?????

  • Thanks for the option of disabling them; I don’t want to develop some view count complex.

  • Yay! Thanks for the hardwork (yet again). Yes, the thing with your own views get counted too is a tad too weird. Glad you guys worked that out. *thumbs up*

  • thanks for adding this feature. keep up the good work, Xanga Team :)

  • @GrannyHappyNanny - I asked the exact same question and never got an answer.  Please let me know if you!

  • @citykatmm -   Nope, I never got an answer.  Sure wish I would have as I am still really wondering about it.  It freaks me out!  I have never got answers for anything I have asked about.

  • thanks xangateam! :D

  • Thank u im so proud 2 be on xanga and i already luv xanga so much well g2g bye comment me back

  • @hopelessromantic@datingish -  Totally agree. Keep up the great work.

  • Why is there no correlation between the views and the footprints?

  • Doesn’t work in “look and feel”

  • On my search for a pharmacy to get some Cheap Viagra I was thinking about how to hide my view counts, thank god I logged in that found the steps here by a casualty.
