  • Mo’ Ideas

We’ve been going through the Top Ideas, and picking off the ones that we can do quickly .

    1. FIXING PHOTO MANAGER BUG

First, we started with this bug report:

Good eye.  It’s all fixed now – thanks Delphiki!

    2. MAKE LINKS IN PULSE CLICKABLE

Then we moved to Idea #10:

It’s working now!  You can check out Justin’s test pulse here:

    3. XANGA MOBILE

Finally, Jonathan asked for a Xanga Mobile app:

We actually have a Xanga Mobile app available through a partner as a subscription service.  Xanga Mobile supports all the major carriers in the US, I believe.  You can find it on the frontpage; there’s a module called “Xanga Mobile”. Just put your phone number in there and see if they support your handset.

    ————

Thanks to everyone for all the awesome ideas.  We just crossed the 10k line: there are now over 10k votes on all the various Xanga Ideas!  Simply amazing… keep ‘em coming.

We’ll be picking off a few of the bigger Idea projects over the next month or two (including TheTheologiansCafe’s idea for improving footprints that we mentioned in the last post).  We’re also in the process of moving our physical servers (hence the increase in site maintenance lately)… so that’s keeping us busy.  Thanks to Dan, Jon and Janet for staying up late to lift those heavy servers!

But in the meantime, we wanted to get some more quick bug fixes and new features out there, to show that we’re taking Xanga Ideas very seriously.

Happy New Year to everyone on Xanga!

    John

  • Very cool – thanks!

  • That’s great

  • You all rock! Though I’m having some serious issues with my pulse. If the link starts with http://pulse… I can’t click on it, which means I can’t post a pulse from my inbox or click on anyone else’s.

  • Woohoo! Happy New Year!

  • i just noticed that links were made clickable – i was incredibly excited!

    much thanks.

  • @casmarie - Hmm we’ve received some reports of a similar issue. I’ll pass it along – in the meantime, try http://www.xanga.com/casmarie/pulse.

  • keep in rockin’ xanga.

  • Fantastic! I noticed the link working in my last post! Bravo!  As far as Xanga Mobile, I tried that and it said my Blackberry was not supported. Hmm… any ideas why? I figure Blackberries hold a large enough percentage of the market to warrant inclusion. Or no?

  • Great job Xanga Team!!!

  • How about that “No” vote? You’d have more votes if we could also say NO to things…or just add comments.

  • Awesome stuff, guys. Keep up the great work! I can’t wait for yall to get my idea out there, it will be so amazign!

  • @MyxlDove - Hmm, no idea why.  Our team is way too small to build mobile apps for every handset, so we outsourced it to a company that specializes in doing just that!  They probably prioritize based on how many users each handset has and how hard it is to develop an app for that handset.

I don’t have any insight into that one – I only just this year replaced my clunker of a Verizon picture phone!

  • I think that what you do is great!  Using wikinomic crowd source theory to enhance the site through populated user ideas.  You guys are awesome!

  • @john - Thanks for the response, John. No worries here. It won’t change my Xanga habits much. Would’ve been nice for responding to pulses. But meh. You guys are doing a fantastic job.

  • Cool beans!

  • Thanks for all of your hard work. I hope the search your own site idea gets launched.

  • sa-weet!   (will one of those be API’s?)

  • Awesome!

  • A-hah.  So that’s why all the maintenance.  Can you please please please do us a favor & let us know AHEAD of time when these moves are scheduled?  I remember the last time you guys did that, things crashed & were down for days.  It would be nice to have a heads-up at least the day before so we can back up our own files.

  • i love that we can click on links now!

  • You guys are awesome! Thank you!

  • Happy New Year~

  • So you’re not going to fix the “off by one” error in the post views that every freshman learns about in computer programming 101?

  • @john - Then I guess my Xanga Idea I submitted to just be able to text something (like we would text to a friend’s cell) isn’t going to be nearly so easy, huh? Because I had JUST found out – during my time with Verizon – that my phone had recently become supported but I couldn’t justify the cost with my current finances. THEN I had to switch to T-mobile…what-do-ya-know? My phone’s not supported.

WOULD it be that difficult to make it where you can just text to our Pulse account instead of using the app? *completely clueless*

  • @anaraug - Your own view counts only once… that’s the first view?

@NaitoOfNarnia - Pulse is totally different from the downloadable mobile app we offer through our partner!  I think we support Pulse through carriers that allow sms’s to turn into emails?  I don’t think it’s difficult to support pure SMS – it’s just very expensive!

  • hurray! yay for ideas :) i wish verizon supported more handsets though… i use a very old phone, being frugal, and it’s not supported

  • My biggest suggestion is a way to delete and streamline subscriptions (people who you’ve subscribed to, mainly).  For years, I’ve had to scroll through a list and….its just hard!  I’d really like to get rid of my subscriptions more easily.

  • @john - Gotcha. Okay…um. How about this? Let’s say it costs a credit or two to send an SMS to our Pulse account. That way, over time, we’ll have to either buy credits or take more surveys (I know, I know…I can HEAR the mumbles and grumbles from other people…but if it COSTS money, then ya gotta make money somehow to support it).
And…what’s the difference between the Mobile App and Pulse? I thought the Mobile App was what ALLOWED us to send Pulses FROM our cells. *confused*

  • @heyjulsiscoo - I think that idea has been voted pretty high up .

@NaitoOfNarnia - The Mobile App lets you access Xanga posts and subs on your cellphone…  it’s more than just an sms thingy.

  • @john - Oh cool! Then maybe it IS worth the cost…now only if I could afford even that. What about the idea of making SMS cost credits? Would that help cover the cost to make it doable?

  • @NaitoOfNarnia - It’s a clever idea! You should add it to the Ideas database .

  • @john - I’ll take that as a possible YES. *grins* I already submitted the idea. But I’ll add/edit the idea to include the use of credits…so long as it is something you think can actually make a difference. I want to suggest things that are actually likely of happening. I’ll stop “bugging” ya now. :)

  • Thanks for the great work guys…..V

  • @john - If it’s intentional… OK I guess… It’s just that the single entry itself has not been viewed since it was posted.  You don’t show my views on footprints, do you?

  • @anaraug - Yah you’re right, we don’t – we used to, but people got confused and thought someone was stalking them (when it was just themselves).

You land on your own blog page when you post, so I do think it makes sense to have it start with one view.  But post it as an idea!  If people agree with you, we’d be happy to change it .

  • great news! thanks!

  • Sounds cool. Thanks for the information.

  • Thanks for all the hard work.
Glad to see that some of the ideas are already creating changes.

  • @john - Ah thanks.  Honestly, it does reassure me that it’s that way on purpose.  (On Myspace there are so many awful coding errors… miscounting your friends, posts, views.  Everything countable is wrong.  This is the only such thing I’d noticed on Xanga and it was on purpose! Hooray!)

  • That is awesome.  This was one of my favorite ideas.

  • keep it up! i can’t wait for the launches of more “cut entries” options and javascript for themes as well mood theme options for the editor ;D

  • I was beginning to wonder. Looks like my “blocking” idea is near the top!! Awesome! I hope it makes it. You know how long Moniet and I have been trying to get this. Looks like it is getting enough votes that we are not alone. Thank you!

  • AWESOME!! You guys are awesome!

  • Re: Xanga Mobile.. before I go handing out my phone number to some nameless “partner”, is there any way we can see a preview of what the app does, or at least a feature list and the name of the “partner”?

  • GOOD Job, you guys!!!

  • @sean - Ah there’s a post about it on thexangateam blog… I’ll have to dig it up. The partner is called Intercasting, and they’re good guys.  They didn’t support my phone though and I don’t think they support the iPhone.  I can look up more info for ya later!

  • It sounds like you could use some help. Is there a position, even temporary opening soon?

  • Nice! I knew you guys had Xanga Mobile but I voted for Jonathan’s idea anyways because my phone isn’t supported right now. I have a nokia 5310. Don’t know if the iphone is included either.

  • @john - how about a “more info” link in the “xanga mobile” module on the home page? :)

  • Happy New Year, Xanga Team.  I think all of you are awesome and Xanga is tops on my list over and above any blogging site I have ever been talked into to peek at / check out.

    Have a great year.

  • Sweet! Can’t wait for more great ideas to be implemented =]

  • You are awesome!  All of you!

  • Thanks for all your hard work!

I have an observation:  Your Xanga Uploader won’t work for me ever since I had to get a new computer with…..gasp….gag….hurl…Vista!   I just loaded over 1700 photos to my new site…..the hard way!      waaaa  waaaa

    ~Ray~

  • Can we keep the old editor please? This is something that is really important to me and the rest of the layout/graphic/icon community on xanga. Without the old editor we’re going to be driven out of business because we can’t post our codes. Please reconsider getting rid of it on January 20th.

    - Lissa

  • Y’all continue to astound me.

Although, I do have one qualm:  the surveys/offers/widgets only give us credits.  I say it’d be cool if you mailed us a cookie every time we did one of those things.

  • All I can say is that you guy are awesome!!

Thanks so much for all you do to make us happy and to make Xanga what it is.

I’ve been here nearly 7 years and so many, many new things on here since then.   Keep up the good work!!

  • ultimate win.

Now when do we get auto-save?

  • W1NW1NW1NW1NW1NW1N

  • keep up the good works

  • hi.  i have at least two ‘bugs’ on my site, would anyone be able to help fix them?

rss feed is set to on, but the mouse hover shows i have chosen _not_ to have a rss feed.  (footprints do show use of an rss feed, but i don’t see that option on any page on my site.)

i have ‘friend request’ set to no, but still get requests.

also, on my homepage, at the top, is a line with links to:  vids, pics, subscribe, etc – but i do not see this on any public page.  i would prefer these links instead of modules for vids, pics – is there anyway to get that line with links to show on my public page?

  • n_n

    happy new year!

  • He’s not the only one who had ideas about footprints.

  • i can’t get the moble to work for my phone. i have a palm centro.

  • Thanks for the update. It’s always good to know that you guys are actually listening to us, which is pretty awesome.

  • Please make a way that you can either batch protect or batch privatise posts. We used to be able to do that by “deleting” our account and then reinstating it but now obviously if you delete your account it’s really gone so there is no way to do it.

  • Keep the old editor, please! Not everyone wants to use themes on Xanga and the layout community here on Xanga posts HTML codes in weblog entries to layouts they create for people to use. However, the new editor messes up our layout codes when we try to post the codes into the entries, unless we use the old editor version that is. So please Xanga, HEAR US OUT. We want the old editor to stay! If not, could you at least make the new editor compatible with posting HTML codes into the weblog entries? We need the old editor, please consider. Thanks for your time.

  • thanks! you guys rock!

  • Oh you busy bees, thanks for the hard work, this site keeps getting better and better!

  • i wonder what’s next. batch post editing? batch profile picture editing? please? pretty please?

  • I’m so freaking mad!!! I wanted to look at my old old old xanga from like 8th grade, but I shut it down a loooooong time ago.  I tried to retrieve it again but the email I have was also from 8th grade which was back in 2004, meaning thats when I made my email.  I haven’t been in that email in FOREVER so I def. don’t remember the pw and the pw retrieval thing didn’t work.  Is there any flipping way I can get my old xanga back? If not even to sign in just reactivate it so i can go to my site, read my old posts & get a good laugh. PLEASE respond!!!!!!

  • how can i work for u guys? or the like?

  • I am very disappointed with xanga when you never work on giving us java script.

  • I am still loving being  able to add links into pulses.

  • Yay thank you!!! One possible suggestion.. I don’t know if it’s been suggested before. But daylight savings times. Last time I checked it was only available in the US… It would be amazing to have it for other countries too… Like New Zealand! :D

  • Thank you for sorting out the problems with the guestbooks.

  • i found the new option to ‘delete’ a friend without ‘blocking’ the person from your site.  thanks!

  • Just passby, if you are interest in piano please join this blogring. Thanks!
    http://groups.xanga.com/groups/group.aspx?id=2561342

  • I would love to be able to use image swap code in the claf page. I want to have buttons in my header so when you mouseover they swap to another jpeg (where the text is another color). I was told awhile back this is not supported because of an onload javascript issue. I was told their might be workarounds?

  • That reminds me time for Adelaide, South Australia in the timezone is incorrect. Its supposed to be 30 minutes later I believe.

  • Hi, i’ve been a Xanga user for a few years now. Today, I called the Xanga office about a question I had that was not covered in the FAQ. I would just like to say that I am very impressed with the efficient and professional way my inquiry was handled. To everyone at Xanga, thanks for being a great website and putting your users first. I would definitely give a positive recommendation to anyone uncertain about which weblog community to utilize.

  • Why is Xanga deleting my weblog photos? msimotion

Why do I not see my pic in my blogrings? msimotion

What happened to the blogring selection???? msimotion

  • am i doing something wrong here? ..have i left something open?… i keep getting the District of Columbia MSIE  /home2/user/aspx footprint……. after almost every time i change page… this all started again after i recently changed my background pic so… did i do something or leave something undone?

  • Xanga app for blackberry, please please pleeease..

  • Here’s one -

Could you please let us choose the titles for our blogs? So, for example, I could stick something more interesting at the top of the screen than the very bland and generic

    “josephdunphy’s Xanga Site”

and other Xanga users could, as well? There are many services that let their users do this, and to date, no ill effects have followed.

Lameness might sometimes be unavoidable, but it should never be mandatory.

  • It’s great that you guys rely on user feedback so much, keep up the excellent work!

  • LOL, I had no idea I was mentioned here.  I check my ideas and see how many votes I got and if they were launched.  I did notice right away when it was launched, but I didn’t know that the xanga team posted about it. xP  I was wondering why I got some hits from my idea.

    Thanks for fixing that. :D
