  • Subscription Alerts Survey

    We’re looking into whether or not we should offer instant sub alerts.  We’ve added them for comments, replies, and PM’s… and they’ve been a big hit.  And for technical reasons (see below), the non-instant daily digest is getting increasingly hard to pull off.

    But before we made any decisions, we wanted to get your input on the pros and cons of instant alerts!

    PROS:

    • Instant alerts make it a lot easier for you to find out about updates.
    • You can read Xanga while at work, school, or cafes without getting blocked by a firewall.
    • We’d name the email “Subject:” lines so that Gmail knows how to thread them together into a conversation.
    • It would tee us up to eventually offer updates over IM.
    • It would be a lot easier to generate instant alerts than building customized daily digests for everyone.

    CONS:

    • Instant alerts for subs may result in too many emails.
    • Maybe people love reading their daily digests?  (If this is you, please let us know in the comments!)

    Ah… the trusty ol’ daily digest.  A little background on these guys: it’s actually really hard to generate those daily digests.  We have to query the entire database and then build customized emails for each subscriber. It takes hours to do and the results can be huge: Dan mentioned recently that his daily digest is over 1 megabyte!

    Personally, my daily subs email is so overwhelming that I stopped reading it.  We’d love to switch to instant alerts (with an optout to turn them off)… but that seems like a big change and we wanted to move slowly here.  So we thought we’d start by asking you guys some questions, and then following up with some further posts for discussion.

    Please take our impromptu survey!

    1. How many people do you sub to?
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?

    Thanks!

  • 1. Tons.
    2. Yes I get it. No I don’t read it.
    3. Yes, if it used IM.
    4. Maybe.

  • You can’t even get sending pulses by text fixed, and you don’t have anything on your support pages to help. Why would I think any of this is going to work right?

  • <li>How many people do you sub to? About 150<li>Do you get and read your daily digest email? No I read online only.<li>Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? NO.<li>Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? None

    It’s a cool idea guys; I just wouldn’t use it. Sometimes I feel like this site has too many “gadgets.”

  • 1. 296, although that is over the years I’ve been on xanga and most don’t post anymore. Probably in reality somewhere between 35-60 that still post.
    2. I get it, it’s autoarchived by gmail I think though. I don’t read it anyway.
    3. Absolutely, I love the instant alerts for feedback type stuff, especially when I’m working I can grab my phone and see my comments real quick.
    4. That would be a good option. And, I don’t really know how many I would use it for.

  • 1.  140 blogs (although not all of them are active) this is probably 0.001% of John’s subscriptions.
    2.  No
    3.  No
    4.  No – I don’t read my blogs at work.  I like to set aside a bit of quiet time to do my blogging (reading and writing).  Although when I work at home I may glance at Xanga every so often.

  • 1) a lot

    2) yes I do, tho I tend to skip over the ones that post too many pictures, too many topics or too many times3) yes I would4) I’m not sure..I would have to give this one a little more thought. If I think enough of someone to sub, I’ll probably want to read what they write. Then again if they write more than a couple of times a day, I’ll also lose interest and start skipping/skimming over your stuff.
    5) if you really want to improve xanga, block the time stampers. One timestamp a day is enough. really.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? like 300 but only about 10-20 are active, i’d say
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? nope, turned it off, one of the first things i did
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? no way
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? no, i keep up to date all online

  • <li>110 people.<li>I hate the daily digest.  I’ve never gotten it ever.  <li>I wouldn’t use instant alerts.<li>No.

  • i don’t need instant alerts.
    and?  i can’t read it at work anyhow.  i have to actually work.  that and we have no internet access other than to client related sites.
    and, for security purposes, our cell phones have to be shut off while at work.
    that aside, even if i could read it at work, instant alerts would drive me nuts.  same reason i never chose to get daily email digests on who’s posted, etc…
    i’d rather just scroll thru my “OLD STYLE” homepage to see what’s new.  :)

  • i never read the daily digests

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?  About 155.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?  Yes and most of the time.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?  *shrugs* Either way, it’s cool.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?  I like that idea, I’d love to be able to select the people I recieve alerts about.

    Thanks guys!

  • Noooo, I don’t like this!

  • I use to love my daily digest.. However now I am subscribed to a lot of people that I don’t necessarily want to read daily.  Maybe there should be an option where it cues up the titles to all of your subscriptions posts(as links?)

    My biggest concern, instant updates would lead to more time stamping drama… and I don’t want to get a new update everytime someone time stamps a blog.

  • 1. ~100 people.
    2. I’ve disabled that.
    3. No, since I’m always logged in. (gosh, I’m an addict)
    4. Eh… yes, no, I don’t know.  There are maybe 10-15 Xangans I would like to know about instantly.  But again, I’m always logged in so it’s not necessary.

  • I have a number of people selected for the daily digest emails, and I never get the emails, even though I’ve checked my email at Xanga and the settings many times. (I get emails about other things.)

    I’d love to have this email instant feature as I know some subscription emails get buried when I’m not on Xanga for a day or two.  I would probably not want more than 10 people on the list, maybe 15 at the most. I’m subscribed to around 190 folks.

  • with over 250+ subs, that would be way too much spam. I don’t think it’s useful nor necessary.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?

    About 140, of which about 80 are active and 40 are very active (daily or more often).

    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?

    Yes.

    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?

    Maybe. I’d want to try it first and see.

    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?

    If I could cherry-pick, that would be incredible! I’d pick about 20 folks.

  • @bmrowland - Oh yeah, time-stamping drama. I didn’t think of that.

  • Really, what I want is for people to have a limited number of recommends a week/day, so they can’t go retarded crazy with it.

  • @bmrowland - @bmrowland - @sonnetjoy - It’s gonna take some time to digest the survey results and see if it makes sense to do instant alerts… but we would never want to send out email alerts for timestamped entries.  Ugh that annoys me so much!

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 30some

    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? No.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? I’d rather us daily digest.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? That’d be neat.  But again, I prefer to read everything on the site.

  • 1: 10-20 and maybe growing.
    2: Only when I don’t have time to log onto Xanga, if I’m on Xanga, then I just go to my subs page.
    3: I don’t text.
    4: Sure?

    I think instant would be awesome and it looks like it’s easier on the XangaTeam too. (:

  • @john - Can you hear that? It’s my sigh of relief!

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? I’m guessing 25 to 30.

    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? No. I read everything on site.  And I wish I could opt my site out of having my posts sent out.  The reason for this is that people will sub and just read my posts off site and never comment.  I think that is kind of creepy.  Then when I block these people or post protected and not include them on my protected list they get angry at me.  Yeah, I really wish you provided the option to not have my posts sent out.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? No.
    4.
    Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how
    many of your subs would you want instant updates for? No.

  • 1. 20ish
    2. Yes, and most of time I read it.
    3. Yes.
    4. Yes. Around 10.

    I think the idea of #4 is great, btw.

  • i LOVE my digest….. it makes it so much easier to read all the blogs at once. DONT GET RID OF THEM PLEASE!!!! thats one of the reasons why i love the site. it makes it easy to read all my subs… i have over 400 subs!

    i like getting instantly notified though of comments and messages….

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? – ALOT
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? – i get it ; dont read it!
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? – yes
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? id like the chance to customize a certain list!

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?
    47

    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?
    No

    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?
    No

    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?
    Maybe. Up to 10.

  • Yes, have the option for updates only for certain subs.

    I don’t do daily digest since I have 80 some subs.

    Truthfully, I only want to be updated when one of my subs breaks up with her boyfriend and is suddenly back on the market.

  • Alerts are buggy and need to be fixed before you create new alerts.  I never know which entries my comments are coming from because my alerts no longer have the title of the entry in the subject line.

    -ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • @doraemonxo - should xanga calculate if the girl is hot or not before sending you an alert?

  • @john - hells to the yeah!  But you need to include a 18 and over calculated filter to not get my hopes up.  (incubation req.)  oh god, i hope i don’t get in trouble for this.

  • Hmm, I prefer the daily digest, that way all of the subscriptions are in one place. If I got a seperate email every time someone posted, that would be dozens of emails per day – no thanks. The old system works well for my readers who don’t get on xanga often, because I make my old posts protected. It’s also helpful if you want to refer back to a post that someone has deleted, then you just have one email  for that day, as opposed to scads of them. While we’re at it, why have the comment alerts stopped showing which entry they are about? It can be confusing.

  • @skanickadee - I have to say, the ability to opt-out of having your own posts emailed to others would be a real step forward.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 85
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? No – I sub everyone online only
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? No. I want to blog/read when *I* want to, not have it shoved at me all day long.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users? No.  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? None

  • At the moment im young, reading the updates keep me orientated, I know its a huge mountain for you, thanks for your great effort,  Maby if you supply the option to the newbies like me as most experienced hands do not need them – would that diminish the load?

  • 1. Less than 100.
    2. Yes, and No.
    3. Yes.
    4. That’s a interesting thought.  Yes!  I don’t know how many.

  • I don’t know how many subscriptions I have, or how many people sub to me.  I think there used to be a number, a count of how many of each I have, but I don’t see it now.  I have a lot… of both.  I seldom read my digest, and very few of my subs are included in it, anyway.  Most are “online only.”  Many people tell me they read me daily in their digests.  If that’s true, I’ll lose some readers if you cut it out… or maybe I’ll gain some commenters — the ones who read digests don’t often comment.

    I don’t want any more email, thank you.  I won’t miss the digest if it disappears, and I would hate to see it replaced with a multitude of individual alerts.  If I want to see who has posted lately, I can use my ugly universal inbox.  My old private home page has the complete list of subs sorted in order of latest update.  I use that, too.

    At first glance, I think it would be nice to have alerts for a select few subs, but I know that soon that list would grow as unwieldy as the subs list has.  I’m a promiscuous subber and a sometimes reader, but mostly a writer.  Just don’t take away my x-Tools and you can do whatever you want (within reason).

    EDIT:  correction:  I scrolled way way down and guess what?!  The numbers are still there.  I have 897 subscriptions.  I thought it was more.  It WAS more, but recently I deleted some of the ones who hadn’t posted since 2005 or so.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?

    Hm, around 10 or less maybe?
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?Yes, I read my daily digest email.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?I think it would become way too much of a hassle. Likened to Facebook Hassle on notifications -___-
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?
    I think receiving alerts from certain users would be okay I guess. That option seems more reasonable. It allows you to keep up with you’re most read subscriptions while still receiving the “not-so-often” clicked upon subscriptions.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? Around 50 or so, though only 10-15 or so update on a regular basis
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I get the email.  I only read the email if I’m only going to be on the computer for a limited time (ex. vacation)
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Weren’t instant alerts implemented once before?  It seems like someone who used to subscribe to me (and eventually shut down their site) had their sub alerts to digest – instant or something to that effect.  Regardless, instant sub alerts seem to be overkill to me.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? No, it’s either receive alerts from all subs or no subs.  I don’t want to pick and choose.

  • 1 A lot!
    2 no
    3 no
    4 good idea!

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?  30
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?  No
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?  I’d give it a try but may disable if it got too overwhelming
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?  I only sub to people I enjoy reading so it wouldn’t matter for me if you made this an option…

    Great job, guys!  Keep up the good work.  I still would like to see the universal inbox function more like an email inbox (deleting posts you’ve read, showing read and unread messages separately)

  • 1. 40
    2. Of course.
    3. No…too overwhelming and difficult to organize.  And you’ll lose the purpose of the function of daily sub.  You’ll eventually become something like facebook.
    4. No.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 11 (not many I know)
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? No
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Yes
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  Yes
    If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? As many as you can pull off. Some people may want an email every time a sub/friend posts. I’d probably only want my faves to email (maybe 10, at the most) but some readers will want more.

  • 1. 50+, i think
    2. yes, though it’s sometimes (always) late =/
    3. Of course! 100%! All the way!
    4. I’d like it for all of them.

  • I’ll stick with the Daily Digests, thank you.

  • #1  Tons

    #2 Sometimes, sometimes

    #3 maybe

    #4 not sure

  • @skanickadee - I second, third, and fourth the opt-out for posters. I only want people to read my content online … for the very same voyeuristic/creepy/no comment/no footprint factor. That said, I *do* read my daily email (when it manages to make it) for the select subs I selected to receive email about. The rest I check online, but I can’t always get online. I would read instant updates, if I could weed out who I got alerts on. I wouldn’t want my own content to be instant-alerted … I like to reserve the right to change my mind/edit/privatize at any time without wondering who is reading an original verson. I like the daily digest and sub to 51 blogs, only about a third of which are active.

  • About 200.
    No, I stopped that the first year I was here, it crammed my mailbox to overflowing 4-5 times a day and I couldn’t keep it under control. I read online only.
    I doubt I’d use the updates, if so, it would only be on an emergency basis, such as computer issues or vacation, so I didn’t miss too much while away. And for sure I’d want to be able to turn it off, and also the IM feature…the last thing I’d want is IM notices for ten minutes after turning on the IM once a week.

    Honestly, people have complained about the e-mail subs for years….either they get multiple copies, or none at all, or only part of them. If there’s a better way, go for it.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?  roughly 20
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?  i get it and i try to read it but it seems like a daunting task to read an email that is so long
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?  i would absolutely.  once read i could delete it instead of reading half of the daily email then going back to it later to figure out where i left off.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?  i would probably do it for all of them but the option of chosing who would be nice.

    also, instant emails for protected posts would pwn.

  • 1. How many people do you sub to?
    58 currently.

    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?
    I think it arrives a day later for me being in Australia. I just browse through it and if there is an entry I’m interested in that I have missed from my Universal Inbox I’ll click.

    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?
    Propably not because I’d get too emails.

    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?
    N/A

    I would still like the daily digest – how about just having the links of the titles of those who have updated in the e-mail – rather than all the writing and images?

  • I think instant updates would be cool as long as the read online option is still an option because If it gets too many emails I can switch some of them to online only.

  • When I am busy for a few days, I rely on my subscription digest to inform me of what the people I read are writing.  I use this daily digest as a way to weed out people I don’t necessarily follow very closely.  And it is nice to have ONE email that consolidates them altogether rather than to have individual alerts when people make a post (in addition to comments, PMs, etc).  While I subscribe to over 50, I have the email option on for less people.

    I would prefer that you keep the subscription daily digests, and inform people that they can customize it to a smaller “favorites only” kind of digest — which is a nice way of sorting through one’s private page which looks completely inundated.  If you have individual alerts, I will likely disable it.

  • 1. 25

    2. Daily Digest

    3. No

    4. I am not in favour of instant alerts.

  • I see a couple of people agreed with me about not having their posts sent out via daily digest.  I hope this at least merits your consideration???

  • I actually closed my old xanga and started a new one just to whittle down my subs. to about 5 people. Does that answer your question?

  • I’m sorry, but I think I have to be in the camp of “why change what isn’t broken when a lot of other stuff is broken?” on this one.

  • 1.  Maybe a dozen between both accounts. I’m a finicky reader.
    2. No, web only
    3. Not interested.  I get enough other email
    4. Possibly, but maybe for about a half dozen at most,
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Let me ask this from the side of the one who is subscribed to.  It has been brought up several times within Ideas.  What if people are merely subscribing, but never coming by our sites because they are able to read in their digests and now in individual emails, can we  change OUR settings to not allow emails?  Yes, we should be honoured to have folk wanting to read our material, but one way communication gets tiresome.
    Another concern I have about instant email, is the fact I often forget to set certain posts at Protected or Private.  I do not know when you exactly gather the posts for the digest, but at least I feel I have a bit of a cushion.
  • 1. somewhere around 80 and growing.
    2. yes. but i only have it set to get the dailies from a handful of those.
    3. yes. i’d probably prefer it, actually. for some reason i thought you used to have the instant emails and i miss them.
    4. yes. see #2. probably 10 or so, rough estimate.
  • @scramBledmegZntoasT - So one thing out of many doesn’t work, and that means they’re incapable of doing this? Great reasoning.
    What would be better would be to splice up the Universal Inbox into categories.
    -Posts
    -Recommends
    -Pulses
    -Photo/Video Uploads
    -Starred Entries (for when someone gives an entry a star rating)
    And the best way to do this would also have a numerical counter next to each tab to signify new items; much like your message system.
    I’ve never read my Daily Digest. Ever.
  • 1. Less than 10 i think…
    2. Yes everyday, its the highlight of my day
    3. Not really sure
    4. Yet again, not really sure
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? Over 20, I think.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?I get it, never read it.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Sure.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? I’d probably only want instant updates for about 5-10 of them.
  • @Dare2BDiferentt - I agree with him…
  • @Sapphirelle -   I don’t read the alerts at all unless it talks about Breatharians.  I am a raw foodist and that is why I joined this site in the first place.  Not interested in all the other stuff.  Sorry, you probably didn’t want to hear that, and you probably write a good column, but I don’t have the time and it doesn’t interest me.
    Dena
  • HI,
    I just wrote you an email or comment whichever you want to call it then was asked to sign in and I used information from another email address, so sending this comment so that ai can sign in correctly.
  • @RawHealth -   RawHealth Iuse on another website.
    My username is kehias1 and my password is mike68 for this site.  Hope that clears everything up.
    Thank you for letting me straignten myself out.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to?
    47
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?
    Yes, but I don’t have it set up for all my subs; just certain users who update regularly, and the Ish sites like Revelife. That last part is the most important to me. There’s no way I’d want a separate email for each post on a community site like that. I like that a day’s worth of abbreviated posts come in one email for me to peruse and click through if I want to read the whole thing.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?
    Only for certain individuals.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?
    Yes, definitely. Maybe a dozen, at the most.
  • okay, then what is my password.  i have kehias1 and mike68 written down in a password book.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 34
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I get it, but I rarely read all of it. I only actually look it if I was busy the day before, and even then I only skim it for a few of my favorite subscriptions.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Yes
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? I really only need instant updates from about 20 or so.
    I really like that it would be thread together for Gmail users.
  • 1. 65. I typically friend somebody first and read their entries from the universal inbox, based on how interesting the titles are. If they are consistently writing blogs I’m interested in, I’ll subscribe.
    2. I do read it, but more commonly I use the subscriptions page in my private site. The sub email features blogs from the day before and I like to stay more current.
    3. I would if I could customize who I recieved instant alerts from. Certain people timestamp a lot, and I really don’t want to recieve repeat emails about timestamped entries.
    4. I guess I already answered that in #3 — as for how many – probably only a handful – like 20 or so.
  • RSS Please…
  • I for one would welcome them.
  • 1. 2
    2. Never, it is easier to just login and read whatever is new when I have the time.  But I know some of my friends only read the daily digest and hardly ever login.
    3. Maybe, although I probably would not pay attention to it either.
    4. I could easily live without it.
  • i think this sucks because unlike a ton of people who commented on here i DO read my e-mail subs.  And if you send me 6 in a day that would be really annoying.  I love receiving my subs all at once so I can READ them all at once.  If I wanted to read them individually I wouldn’t subscribe to the online daily digest.
    I like getting the comments on my site instantly, but wouldn’t want instant blogs sent to my email.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to?136
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?no
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?no
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?no
  • I only read blogs at home. I like having instant alerts. I don’t have a big subscription list. If you can give people the option of turning it off/on depending on if they want to be notified that would be cool.
  • 1. i have 79 subscriptions
    2. i don’t get it, and even when i did, i didn’t read it. i just open my subs module here
    3. yep, definitely
    4. yeah, about 10 or so
  • 1. around 95
    2. No, I opted out of emails, I only read online
    3. Not for everyone
    4. Yes, maybe about 15.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? Lots and lots.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I never read them. I always delete them straight away. I dont know why though.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Yes. But I think you should be able to somehow choose who you want to be notified is updating. So you dont get spammed with emails of course.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? Yes. A few.
  • I have all alerts and Xanga mail turned off.  I don’t want Xanga anything cluttering up my email.  So regardless of what you do I’ll never enable Xanga spam/alerts to come to my box anyway.
    Do as you like, as long as I can disable it, and not have to deal with it.  When I want to know what’s going on in the Xangaverse I sign into my account.
    BP
  • 1. I keep it between 35 and 40.
    2. No.
    3. No.
    4. Sure, maybe only five or so.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to?  About 100.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? Yes! I like getting all my subs in one email.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Probably not, it would fill up my inbox too much.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? I like getting a daily email from all my subs. I don’t want to miss out on any, but I don’t want to be bombarded with instant alerts all day long.
    The daily digest is one of my favorite Xanga features. Please don’t get rid of it!
  • PLEASE DON’T TAKE AWAY MY DAILY SUB EMAIL!!!!  I’m subbed to a ton of people and there’s no way I would be able to keep up with instant updates!!!!
  • 1. i subscribe to 36 people, but a lot of those people don’t update anymore ..
    2. i don’t get the daily digest email because i am so impatient to see if my favourite people have updated that i can’t wait for the daily digest, so i just check my subscriptions page all the time!
    3. no, because what would be the point in getting all those emails (on a good update day!) when i could just check my subscriptions page. although, if i did have an email provider that wasn’t blocked by school as well as xanga i guess it would be useful.
    4. if i wanted alerts, i would only want alerts from 35 people (basically the people that do or possibly could update).
  • I love reading through my daily digests. It’s so easy and organized!
  • 1. 11
    2. I get digest, I don’t read them. Automatic delte.
    3. No
    4. No
  • 1. How many people do you sub to?
    20ish?
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?
    no.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?
    no.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?
    nahh.
  • 1. Around 150
    2. Yes
    3. Yes, I like getting the emails and being able to read them at any time and sometimes keeping them to re-read.
    4. Maybe. I would use it for most if not all.
  • I get email sub updates but I haven’t read them from there in ages.   I’d be happy to see it go.
    I prefer reading updates from my site.
  • 1. 60 or so (about half are active)
    2. I have two xanga accounts. One I get the daily digest. I don’t read it. The other I stopped because I had too many subs.
    3. I would consider using it if you could choose which ones to get alerts for.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users? Yes!  Around 10.
    #4 is a fabulous idea.
  • Eww this idea sucks. Sorry to say xanga.
  • I want to be able to access my xanga via my iphone. Is that possible?
  • 1. i subscribe to about sixty people – but not all of them are active.
    2. no.
    3. maybe.
    4. if it was only for certain users, then yes. i’d probably only want instant updates from those i actively read.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? I’m not sure… somewhere between 35 to 60
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? No and no
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Never
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? No, I like signing in and reading my subs
    Can we have the choice to opt out of having our updates sent out through daily digests and possible instant alerts?  It’s fine if they view it “online only,” but I don’t want anyone receiving my blogs/updates in their e-mail (and I don’t want to block everyone).
  • 1. I’m subscribed to around 100 people.
    2. I don’t get the daily digest e-mail.
    3. I would love for there to be an instant alert for sub updates feature!
    4. It would also be a nice option to get instant updates only from certain users.  I would probably want around a dozen of these.
  • I think this is a good idea. I iz going to agree!
  • 1. 33
    2. Never read it
    3. No
    4. None
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? I think i have 9 subs, but only 4 or so of them are active.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email?  I get a daily digest email and when I’m at home on a slower connection (ugh, dial-up), I read them there.  When I’m on a faster connection, I check them through my xanga:home site
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Maybe
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for?  Only a small amount.
    The reason I like the digest is that when it comes to people who post many entries throughout the day, sometimes only a few of those make the cut for the day and it’s easier to read.
  • Hm. This could be a good idea particularly since you are trying to set it up so that Gmail can thread it correctly.
    Go for it.
  • 1. almost 200
    2. i dont use email, i read my subs on the subs page here .
    3. no i have too many subs who post too long of entries .
    4. maybe . i dont think i would actually.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? maybe 20
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I get it but it has gotten to big to actually read I usually just go to my Xanga page and choose what I want to read
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? no
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If  could choose to recieve instant updates from my favorite xangans I probably would use that service…
  • 1. I sub to 55 sites.
    2. I LOVE MY DAILY DIGEST E-MAIL. I always read it, even if I’m so busy I don’t open a single other thing in my inbox.
    3. I would prefer a daily digest to instant alerts.
    4. I currently have 40 of my subscriptions selected for daily digest.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 16
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? Yes
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? YES!!!  I have been wanting that for a while!
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  No, I would want all of them.
  • @ZeusVideo - Yes, I think it is good reasoning too. Thank you.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 16 people. Of those, 6 are active (posted within the last 9 months).
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? Yes, I read them, unless I already read them by just logging in.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? No.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? No. I don’t want emails about Xanga. I will log in when I want to get any Xanga-related information.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? On my regular xanga, about 18 to 25 though not all of them write every day.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I both receive and read the daily digest. If there is someone who I don’t want to read in my digest, I set them to Online Only.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? No. That is what the universal inbox is for. If I want to read them online, or right after they go up, I’ll read from there. A QUESTION TO YOU: There are many who time-stamp their entries; if they’ve submitted something, how many times am I going to receive it because they’re time-stamping it as brand new, or do you have a filter for that ready to go?
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? I do not want this service, so my answer is no, and none.
  • I think it’s fine how it is!
    1. How many people do you sub to? Around 45, but they don’t update constantly
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? – no, it’s never on time.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? – sure, why not.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? – all of them, probably. Otherwise, I wouldn’t subscribe.
  • 1. I subscribe to about 30-40.  It changes constantly because I unsub when people stop posting.
    2. I get the daily digest, but rarely read it.  I thought I had set all of my subs to online only.
    3. The email alerts would be good.  I use pop3 email, and have rules set up in outlook to sort my mail, so it wouldn’t matter if I had 10 a day or 100 a day.
    4. It would be nice to have instant alerts from certain people, but not others.
  • How do you get Xanga not to tell your subscribers every post and pulse you write?
  • I have 69 subscriptions at the moment, but this site is young.
    I don’t read my email digest. I come to Xanga to read everything. Instant alerts for updates… if those were introduced I must confess that I would turn the option off.
  • I would still like to have a button that says “Do not send any update alerts to your subscribers”…but that is on the “Idea page” already.
  • I read my Xanga Subs! Theyre quite interesting because of the featured questions and all. All my subscriptions came from my emails from featured weblogs. I hope you continue it…!
    xoxo
    L0LA.
  • I don’t really care about this alert thing.
    I login my xanga often to check my subbie.
  • 1. 60-ish
    2. No
    3. Only if #4 was an option
    4.  10 would be a nice number.
  • 1.Heaps I get marketers emails by the truckload
    2.Mostly I read however only comment when I got something to say.
    3. Yeah send to me I will return the favour to all the marketers however they use noreply@xxxx.com most of the time, this wont deter me though.
    4.I say about 5.
  • I sub to about 100 people — I do get the daily digest and I do read it — I also update again later in the day using the new home page listing.  If by instant updates you mean something on the order of the new home page, that would be good, but preferably in conjunction with the daily digest.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? -about 50
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? -no I use google reader
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? -no…
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? -I mostly sub the people I want to read, so about 90% of my subs.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? about 80(but only about 10 or so active)
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? sometimes I don’t get it????but yes, I read it whenever I get it.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates?hmm, maybe.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? yes, only the most active ones
  • 1. 21 subs.
    2. No, I read by subs online.
    3. Maybe, just to see how it works out.
    4. Yes, choice would be nice. I’d want instant updates for maybe 10 subs.
  • no dont do it. its going to get really really annoying afterwards and id hate it
    i rather do my normal daily click click click subscriptions reading
    btw
    when is xanga going to have a mobile xanga website…
  • 1. 15 or 20ish
    2. Yes! I read all my subs during school >:]
    3. Nah, the amout of spam by certain people in my universal inbox ia annoying enough.
    4. Sure, that’d be cool.
  • The fewer emails the better.  It’s just more shit to delete. I’d just turn them all off.
  • 1. About 10 people. I’m not much of a xanga user anymore, but I still like reading friends’ updates. On average only 2 or 3 people update though.
    2. Not anymore. I used to. My reason being that I switched over to plain text email, yet the daily digest didn’t display at all in that format.
    3. Yes, if they can show up in plain text format.
    4. I’d probably do all of my subs since it’s not that many.
  • 1. quite a few
    2. IF I get them I do read them
    3. Yes, I love that idea
    4. No, I want instant updates from all.
  • 1. Around 18
    2. Yes, and most of time I read it.
    3. Yes.
    4. Yes. Around 5.
  • Something else to consider: some people (including me) make posts protected at the end of the day specifically so they won’t be emailed out. If the emails were instant, that would seem to defeat the purpose of temporarily public posts.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? About 80
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? Yes, And I LOVE it.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Nope… I don’t like getting individual email alerts.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? Not really.
  • 1. How many people do you sub to?    25, but three of them are Ish sites and only about six or seven of the others are still active.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? Absolutely! I subscribed to these people because I want to read what they write. The few who write too much that I don’t care about I just set to “No email (online only)” in the settings.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Probably not unless it was reeeally easy and not too annoying. I’m not stalking anybody or anything. I just check my private home page when I get on Xanga if I want to see what’s recent.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? If I did want to receieve instant alerts, I think five or so would be more than enough. I can think of only three or four users I care that much about. I would certainly want to be able to limit which users it sent me instant updates for, because a couple of people post pointless, boring stuff constantly.
  • I think this is a good idea. I’ve always wanted to blog on my Xanga in school, but they always had Xanga blocked. =/
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? 400+
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I get it, but I mostly refer to it as an archive for posts that my subs may have deleted.So I don’t read them unless I’m looking for something.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? Sure, but only if I could designate which subscribers.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? Like I said in #3, I’d like to pick and choose. If given that option, I would probably only select a dozen or so.
  • 1. 50.
    2. I get it, but don’t read it… I just read my subscriptions on xanga itself.
    3. Probably not.
    4. I only sub to the people I’m REALLY interested in reading 24/7… So I wouldn’t care.
  • 1. around 110.
    2. i get it, but i don’t read it.
    3. sure.
    4. yea, probably 4 or 5.
  • I have no idea how many subscriptions I have. I used to get the daily digest but I never read it, it was too long. Now I just use the inbox to read the updates. I would like to get instant updates from certain users but not everyone!! Maybe there could be an option to subscribe to instant alerts when we choose to sub someone?
  • 1. How many people do you sub to?Less than 20
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? I don’t get the email anymore, and the thing on xanga rarely gives me all of the people that have updated. I used to read it everyday.
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? It would be, okay I guess.
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users?  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? All of them
  • 1. a lot
    2. no
    3. Yes
    4. I would LOVE to CHOOSE who I got updates from!
  • i would like alerts  only for private messages.
    1.20
    2. yes and no
    3. no
    4.no
  • 1. 67
    2. NO
    3. Not really but not totally against the idea either
    4. Yes, 5
  • Hi dear Xanga Team gentlemen and ladies:
    First of all let me thank you for nurturing my writing talent through your blogging facility.
    You will be happy to know that I have submitted a wonderful novel– aptly titled LEST- –written by yours truly–to major publishers.This would never have been possible –or even dreamable– to me unless it was for your blogging facility!
     I remain deeply indebted to you XangaTeam for life!.
    From the looks of it,your suggestion certainly seems to be a great facility for blog readers.
    Congratulations a million to you for this innovative idea!
  • 1. About 20
    2. No, I don’t get it. I log in to Xanga and read them on the subs tab/page
    3. No, not if I had to get alerts from all my subscribers.
    4. That would be wonderful. I would probably want instant updates for about 3 of my subs.
  • I love my daily digest! It is so nice to have and look forward to everyday and it is always so organized! I’m sorry that it is so hard to make, but please don’t get rid of it!
  • 1. How many people do you sub to? about 10 unless there are more that juat don’t write anymore.
    2. Do you get and read your daily digest email? EVERYDAY!
    3. Would you consider using instant alerts for sub updates? ehh
    4. Would you only want to receive alerts from certain users? ya i’d have to cut down on by subs cus that would be too many emails. So sad!  If so, how many of your subs would you want instant updates for? about 4 i guess. please don’t!
  • 1.  About fifty I believe.  This is a guess without actually looking.
    2.  Yes, I get it.  Yes, I read it.
    3.  NO NO NO.  I would prefer to keep the daily digest.
    4.  I would want updates from all of my subs.
  • WHY aren’t the recently updated journals on the front page? how are we supposed to find them?
  • I like this idea of getting updates whenever a sub posts a new entry. However, not all subs are created equally. By this, I mean, out of all my subs, I only read about 10 and take them seriously. The others are more or less tedious and dull, and I only sub to them to return the favor. So maybe if I could get updates from just the 10 that I actually want to read, then that would be great. But getting updates for all subs… that’s just too much.
  • 1. 229
    2. No
    3. Yes
    4. 50
  • YAY!  I have wanted this for a LONG time!  I would love it if you did this!  It would make my life so much easier since I’m a “list person” and could delete each e-mail as I read it.
    1.) 40-some
    2.) Yep.
    3.) Oh yeah!
    4.) Nope, all of them!
  • 1. about 100; 2. sometimes when I cannot log onto Xanga but can read email; 3. No, I worry too much distractions and too many emails. 4. great idea. around 10.
  • 1. Few or more. Never really know.
    2. Yes and no.
    3. Yes, that would be good (I think).
    4. Yes. Around 5, 6, 7 or more. And I’d like it if most of them were people I knew (not like you can control that or anything. …can you?)
    My favorites are #1 and #4.
  • 1. 20-ish today, but it varies.
    2.  i get it , but i don’t pay attention all my xanga’ing is done on site.
    3. + 4. nope
  • 1. 20? but i only get like 3-7 a day
    2. sometimes i don’t get them, i read them but it annoys me when i don’t get them because there was this one time i didn’t get any subs for a month
    3. if it’s easier for the system and i’ll actually recieve them, then it’s fine
    4. if i subscribed to them, then i want them instant or daily, as long as i get them
  • There are about 20 of my subs that I wish I could keep even tighter track of.
  • it should be allowed to modify the amount of subscriptions you want
