Customizable Home Pages – Now in Expanded Beta!
The Personal Search & Customizable Home Page updates we announced last week are now in expanded beta – available to all Xangans!
To try it out, just visit your account settings page:
And change your “Your Home” setting to “New Private Home Beta”
We’ve also:
- fixed a few bugs that some of you noticed in the premium-only beta from last week
- tweaked a few things based on initial feedback – e.g. moved the “Subscriptions” module higher and the “Blogrings” module lower on the private “Home” page, and
- made some updates to help these pages work a lot better in IE6 – if you are using IE6 and have *any* ability to upgrade to a newer browser, then please do yourself a favor and upgrade… if for some reason you can’t upgrade your browser, then our sympathies are with you – we’ll do what we can to help!
For a recap of all the goodies in this new beta, please check out our previous post:
Personal Search & Customizable Home Pages
We’re still working on these pages (hence the “beta” status) and we are working on putting *all* the other private pages – except the “Old Private Home”, of course – into this updated, customizable system. So if you come across a page that doesn’t seem to fit the Beta, it just means it hasn’t been upgraded yet. And if you notice any issues with the beta or have any general feedback about it, please leave a comment.
Thanks!
Marc

Cool. I’ll turn it back on & check it out
Hmmm I have a suggestion. Show more entries per page in the universal inbox. The modules on the left side of the page go all the way down to the bottom; why not let the universal inbox entries go further before having to tab to the next page? Just a thought.
@radicalramblings - interesting idea! Will add it to the list.
I have been using it and I really like it. I agree with Wendi in that you should add more updates to each page. And I would still drop the featured question so you can fit two more updates on the inbox above the fold. Most of the featured questions are stupid anyway. You want to drive traffic to the users.
But still, it looks great and I love the improvement.
@TheTheologiansCafe - You can all sleep like babies tonight, Dan approves
LoL
@TheTheologiansCafe - cool thanks Dan… hear ya on the FQ. Wanted to get some more feedback on utility (e.g. from those who don’t already feel they have enough ideas/inspiration to update 3 or 4 times a day
), but the scale seems to be tipping…
Been using mine too, and I love it. I’ve gotten used to the text size and it’s all cool. Added the moon header you suggested and it looks great. Thanks!
@marc - I understand. But do you really want to drive traffic to the least inspired people on xanga?
@MomGoneMadd - I <3 Shann.
Cool! I love the new home page. Now if you could just upgrade my brain so I can find the feedback link without hitting three other links first… Getting old sucks.
Sounds lovely
I’ve really liked it.
And I agree with the previous comments, allowing more entries per page would be very nice.
However, I disagree with Dan. I think the Featured Question should stay where it is.
Yes, it may not be the best it could be right now, but how is it going to change if no one uses it? FQ is a good idea and I think it needs the publicity to become better.
I don’t care about the “fold”, I’m not too lazy to scroll.
I’ve been wondering if maybe the Featured Question shouldn’t be replaced with a daily/semi-daily blogging prompt.
Not a complaint, just an idea.
Very good! Love it!
Now we need a mobile site so we can update on the go *hint hint* lol
Awesome! I love it! I love the customizations, the featured question at the top, and the ability to see what comments you’ve left most recently on other people’s sites. Plus seeing who has visited your site most recently without having to click on the feedback. Wonderful!
That’s great!
So, when are non-premium members getting adsense capabilities?
P.S. I LOVE how you get to see “recent visitors” on the home page. I’m always curious about those who visit my page and don’t leave comments. This puts a proverbial “face” on them.
Thanks!
I like it, but I’d still like to be able to resize pictures in the box. Possible?
I can’t find the “Your Stuff” tab. Did you remove it or put it somewhere else?
I’m really liking the whole thing. It’s turned out great. Any word on getting the Pulse module from the subscription page to the inbox page? That’s really the only change I’d like to see.
@The44thHour - I think it’s a great feature too that just doesn’t get the love it deserves. Like I said in my review of the beta, I think it need a link to submit a question as well to encurage more people to use it.
@TheTheologiansCafe - You can always disable the custome header to get those two or three extra updates. It’s nice to look at, but if we’re talking about functionality, why not get rid of the thing that doesn’t really do anything?
Um, I kind of don’t like the “recent visitors” module. It’s been my preference to ignore my footprints for the most part. But now the most recent footprints are unavoidable. Could you please make the private page’s modules customizable so we can decide what we want to see and don’t?
I’ll be switching away from the beta for now.
I see that people are making suggestions so I figured that I might throw one out here while I was on the page…
Not sure if I am the only one who would like it…
But, I know that Xanga has User Tags.
I also know that when another member tags us, that the only notification I have gotten when this happens is through e-mail.
However, when I don’t get on Xanga right after checking my e-mail, I tend to forget that a user tagged me in one of their posts.
Would there be any possible way for us to maybe get a notification on our universal inbox that a user tagged us in a post, or maybe have it sent to our private inbox or something?
Cool.
Loving it.
It looks nice. A lot cleaner and with the customizable colors I can change it to something my eyes can work with at “those” times of the day. >_
I think you should remove the drop down menu “more” once the user clicks off it it or just make it drop down only on hover–preferably drop down only on hover… It’s a little annoying how it just sticks there.
Really, the extra mouse click to collapse it is annoying.
Oh man, didn’t notice … OH YEAH! LOVE how the header stays on screen as I scroll down.
I agree with @SoapAndShampoo that it would be ideal to have some control over which modules are shown (and possibly the order in which they appear).
And if you’re still trying to keep this whole site IE6 compatible, then MY sympathies are with YOU.
Wow, I like it
But the words can be bigger.
Can someone tell me where the “look and feel” is on the new homepage? I always switch back to the old version just to fix it. Please? Thanks in advance.
@julieyang76 - right next to “Update Your Site” you should see two little links: “view site” and “edit theme”… that “edit theme” link is smarter than the older versions. If you’re using the old “Look & feel” system, it’ll take you to your “Look & feel” page (and if you ever decide to upgrade to a xanga theme, it’ll take you to your theme editor instead).
Thank you so much Xanga for extending this and including us ‘poorer’ folk who can’t afford to go ‘Premium’.
@PuRpLe__fLaMeS - I agree with your idea. Tag notifications in Xanga itself would be handy.
Great! now how about a way to mass delete sent messages?
A couple of things:
1. The custom header won’t let me use a photo in my photoblog. I want to use the banner that I have on my public site, but I get an error saying “.com/photos/(some random letters and numbers) is not a valid image file type.
2. I would like to change the background colour to match up with my public site, as I would like to have the same theme for both my private page and public page.
I like it a lot.
Wow…just changed mine and it looks interesting.
Something I would change…or that I miss from the other version is the “next” and “previous” tabs at the TOP of the page when in the subscriptions pages. I don’t like having to scroll to the bottom of the page of subs to click next when I am trying to get back quite a few pages.
What happened to xanga tv.
@SoapAndShampoo - Hooray I am not the only one!
@marc - But it is not yet searchable, is it? I really like the search function:)
By the way, I like the large “NEXT” button in the subscription page:D
my weblog post is missing
Things NOT working:
1. Audio not playing
2. Editor not working/can’t use half the functions such as numbering, bullets, etc.3. No notifications whatsoever. This is really frustrating as I don’t get any notification that someone has replied to a comment I left on someone else’s weblog. This lack of communication is defeating my purpose of using Xanga and it’s been this way for weeks now.
Any chance you’re going to fix these things? I’ve been paying for premium for 7 years but I could easily go somewhere else and have these functions work without even having to pay. Please do something about this.
I love it. This is a feature I’ve been looking forward to. So far my only issue is that it’s a bit cramped in 1024 X 768 resolution. Particularly up around the search bar.

I find some page(such as home or add weblog) cannot be shown if I am
using firefox (version 3.6.4).
I don’t see a way that I can put a block around my post.. I like that feature.
-♥Support=)*
It was nice for a while, but now I can’t get into the home page – it keeps giving me errors.
I was having fun testing this but I turned it off this morning when the “new.xanga.com” server seemed to be causing problems accessing the site.
You really need some type of “safe mode” so that we can disable beta tools when they crash on us because I couldn’t access my site for quite some time due to this.
Nice

Thank you for sharing this article! I really like it! Because of
their relatively low level of writing. After seeing your article, I tried to
write some of this stuff, I published here, such as Coach Outlet, Coach Outlet Canada and Coach Bags Outlet. Those are
just a large blog, here there are some small blog site, also released a number
of articles. From http://www.usa-coach-bags.com/.
