Upgrading your Private Pages
As promised, we’re starting the final stretch of our upgrades to the new private page!
The new private page supports personal search, color and header customization, and a unified look – as well as clean up of the Private Messages, Friends Manager, and Profile Pics interfaces.A few notes to highlight:
- If you are using the “Old Private Home” (the one that uses custom look and feel), nothing will change. You will continue to be able to use your existing private page, with its custom look and feel.
- If you would rather stay on the un-upgraded private home page, we’ll allow you to downgrade for a period of several weeks until the upgrade is finalized.
Other than that, we’ll slowly start upgrading the private pages for everyone except users of the “old private home” (those will be left alone, although you can still try out the upgrade if you’d like). We’ll start with 25% of users for now. If you’re not included in the upgrade, you can upgrade yourself here!
We’d love to hear continued feedback on the upgraded private page, so let us know in the comments!

i love the new page. it took getting used to but so did everything else. the bugs will be worked out and then the team can look at upgrading the rest of the site. i know it’s coming. thank you guys for working hard and keeping the vision of xanga alive.
Hmm. Well many people left lots of feedback when this was posted about as a “beta test” …
i love the new page! great job!
After using it for several weeks in the beta version, the two things I’d most like to see added are: A “Next” option at the top of the Subs pages, and User Tags visible in the “Feedback Stats” in the left column of the inbox. I’m still getting used to the new setup and still struggle finding things like the Photo Manager, but I like it.
I still hate the flash adds that is pestering me on my private pages – is it part of the upgrade that you will start to get unasked and annoying adverts. Can I get rid of it by going back to the old private pages?

I wish you guys would answer the questions about the problems we have come across. I know getting new ideas and improving things, is all well and good, but if we cannot get any support and some information about what we should do in critical times of a forgotten password, then getting all the new fangled things and pages are moot to me.
Since Thursday night I have been sending questions and messages and have not received a word from the xanga team. I am being shunted to the same old stupid

New layout feels cluttered, disorganized. Unnecessary. Especially considering that the advertisements (plugz) seem to have been emphasized. I liked them better when they were crammed off toward the edge of the page.

Normally I’m afraid of change, and I was afraid of this change when I first saw it… but I actually think it’s pretty cool. It’s like combining classic xanga with new xanga. Well done.
Changing the color scheme, header, and trim is fun.
your comments/your public feed option is nice to have. I like being able to review those things at a glance.
Having the recent visitors visible right in my inbox is very convenient.
So far those are the things I’ve noticed that I like. The changes were big enough to seem new and fun, yet small enough to get used to quickly. It’s a good balance of new and old.
One thing I’d love to see in the future would be a private search bar, to search my own entries (public, protected and private) by title.
You must be working on something because not we can’t change the profile pic and some can’t upload pictures. I do like the new private page though! Thanks!
Is there anyway I can switch it back without going to the Old Private Page? I previewed this new page a few weeks ago, and didn’t like it (and still don’t).

I can’t stand the new private page. Seriously. Is there a way to change it back?
the font on my new private page is way too small for me. it hurts my eyes. i’m serious. how can i change it back to the original way it was??
I can’t read it. It’s probably because of some undiagnosed learning disability or something, because I’ve encountered texts/layouts before that I for some reason cannot understand. Can one of the “customizable” options be to change the font? I also liked it better when the type of update (i.e., weblog, pulse, recommended) was bolded.
I don’t mind the new private pages. I’m still getting used to where everything has been moved to, but I do like that it tells you off to the side who’s visited your page without having to go look at your footprints. The weblog adder on the other hand I detest. I liked it so, so, so much more when I didn’t have to wait for things to pop up. My computer is terribly slow, and it just takes that much longer for me to get something up.
I think it looks great! Except that I really like the ability to read all my subscription on my page. =/ Can you guys put that back? >< Thanks!
I liked how before I was able to read allmy subscriptions on one page without having to click to every person’s page…. Is that possible still? or am I just not finding it…. :

Sounds interesting but my private page is a bit of a mess today. Things are all overlapping and obviously messed up. I’ll try again later and maybe the kinks will be worked out?
I think it will be better in the end if we can actually manage our inbox and everything but I can’t really find a way to do that yet. Another question though is; I am lifetime premium and I thought that meant no ads? Am I wrong on that one? I mean it’s not a huge deal and I know you guys have to do what you can to make enough to keep this site profitable, but the flashing ones are incredibly annoying.

Thought I’d leave some feedback on the new private page. On the computer it looks and works great, but on my mobile browser the top bar (xanga/subs/ratings/flag/etc) moves around on the page and the links hardly work. I’m using android and previous page versions never had this issue. Only the new private page. Everything else works great.
I think the new format is great and, the photo uploader is super too! Great job guys(and gals)!!
PLEASE FIX NOTIFICATIONS! This is getting ridiculous. I pay for premium and it’s been well over a month and I still get NO NOTIFICATIONS whatsoever!! My editor still doesn’t work correctly either. I’ve contacted management by email, twice they said it was fixed, twice I let them know IT’S NOT FIXED, now I don’t even get a friggin’ response! I seriously think you should be extending my premium for AT LEAST a month considering it hasn’t worked right for longer than that.
The new pages look good. I think we could use a “show all in this thread” option for the private messages, though.

@AOK4WAY - Hi, still waiting for a tip here. The new home page is killing me. It’s worse than worthless to me (although I’m sure it works well for lots of other people). Please advise, it’s interfering with my productivity, and I can’t deal with that much longer. I can’t find any link that would allow me to go back to the old page. Please advise. Thanks.
ps: This is exactly why I’ve never considered paying for premium. Why pay for a lifetime of what I have now when you guys are just going to keep changing it and I have no guarantee that I’ll like the changes? You’re making suckers out of your paid supporters.

I don’t like the constant changes. I’ve always liked Xanga because they kept it simple. I especially don’t like the new advertising that appears right in the middle of the newsfeed on the new private page. Very annoying.
Part of what I liked about Xanga was the ability to customize look and feel. I like to see each users unique page.
I like things the way they were. Why do you feel the need to try to keep improving? Haven’t you ever heard, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
The newsfeed is kind of a nice addition. I am less likely to miss something that way, but I still want to be able to go to my old private page.
I never have gotten the purpose of the friends feature. It is never used and as far as I’m concerned can be gotten rid of. Your subscriber’s are your friends.

@AOK4WAY - Click “Settings” under your own name, and then click something safe-ish (say, “Change Password” or “Weblog Editor”). The menu on the left will change. Click “Basics” and change “Your Home” back to “New Private Home” and Save Changes.
I like the old new private home much more. The new way to navigate to our own blog is very strange (involving both clicking the menu title and an item in the dropdown depending on what you want to do), clumsy (involving both mouse-overs and right clicks when you want to view in a new window—this feels like inviting trouble in the future), and inconsistent (with how we navigate when we are already viewing our own blog).
And considering that when you’re on your own blog, you can do it only the old way, which is much better from an accessibility point of view, I don’t see how the new way is better.
Like some others have said, I like Xanga for its simplicity and I don’t like constant changes. I’d rather that things that are not working (such as the “Preview HTML” button in comment boxes) be fixed instead of trashing a perfectly usable (and indeed a very usable) UI.
The old new private home should at least be kept as an option rather than just scrapped.

If you ever remove Rich Classic and/or Old Private Home, than I will leave Xanga for good. Sometimes “New & Improved” just isn’t!
@Old_Photos - we have no plans to remove the “Old Private Home” option… just out of curiosity, what specifically about “Rich Classic” would you miss? Thanks!
I love it! Except one thing.. on our “Recent Weblogs” I could’ve sworn there was a date next to the title of our blog, right? I miss it =( I like to be able to see when I last posted my recent blogs… Just having the title isn’t good for me. But thanks for everything else!

And, as someone’s who’s been here since 2005, I want to thank you SO MUCH for giving us the option to stick with the old private page. I like some of the new changes, but just because I’m used to certain things, it’s nice to be able to keep them. I think that’s one aspect you got right and Facebook didn’t!

I have not been receiving e mail notification for some time on any of my subs or comments -my help topic searchs have led me nowhere -the best hope was the – set email notification off -save- set back on — that was a no go– any ideas?

Why aren’t anyone’s footprints showing up on my site? I am NOT browsing anonymously. They just stopped showing up after this morning and I know for a fact people have visited my xanga. They show up to a certain time and after that, even when someone has visited my site, their footprints aren’t logged.

you guys should add a block friend invite feature. im sure some of us are REALLY annoyed of getting friend invites from the same person…unaccountable times. its annoying and kind of creepy (when people cant take no for an answer).

I’m having issues with my private page, yet AGAIN. My site got switched to the new one again, and now the one I was using before isn’t even in the options for me to switch it back!! WTH?! Hi, do you guys think you can create a playlist feature on the music page for xanga? I would like to organize all of my audio entries in some way and if you guys had a folder system + playlists that auto played all of the tracks that would be awesome. <3

@bluepillorredpill - Hi! We tried to place the “Your Comments” link in an even more prominent location (that is, after you find it the first time, heh)… It’s right above the Universal Inbox area (“Read and Comment”), over on the right.
The other items that were in the “Your Stuff” pulldown (photo manager, video manager, etc.) are all accessible in two places now:
1) in the top toolbar under the “Update” menu… the “edit” links next to photos and videos point to your photo and video managers, respectively.
2) you’ll see the same menu under the “more” link in the “Update Your Site” section at the top of the new home page.

i a m having a lot of issues with my theme and private page .
I’m really, really grateful that we’re being allowed to keep the old private page – I for one could never even figure out how to create a new “theme” with the modules and stuff when that first came out, so I never bothered to ‘upgrade’ and I’m really glad I didn’t. I love the way it is now, and I don’t want it any other way!
There have been some changes which have been a little annoying, but they are a small price to pay to keep the old private page. (i’m talking about the ads in between the entries on the subscriptions list page, and the new bar on the bottom of the screen that has a chat feature. I really don’t get the chat feature – if Xangan’s want to chat with each other there are plenty of other ways to do it – they can just do it the regular way by exchanging information and IMing through Google Talk or AIM or ICQ or MSN or whatever! It’s just ridiculous to have it embedded like it is on Facebook. I REALLY don’t want Xanga to become a next Facebook so PLEASE do not try to emulate anymore of their features here. I beg you!
Other than that, I love Xanga!

I’m using the Old Private Home page, and now part of it is missing. I thought it would be untouched. It’s making navigation a whole lot harder.
I’m not one to like much change – I guess I’m a good ole-fashioned Baptist: “WE’VE ALWAYS DONE IT THIS WAY!”
I will be willing to give it a try, but I’m not on Xanga much any more since all my family & friends (except one) have gone to facebook! I don’t like facebook because it is so much more complicated than Xanga, plus… facebook is just TOO BUSY. I love all the bacground and options that I have with Xanga (alhough I never did master all the fancy stuff on here either), but at least my eyes had something pleasing to look at while I worked around in Xanga.
Another thing I appreciate about Xanga: NO foul or offensive language!!! It seems to be on almost every page on facebook!!
That is considered a “HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT by the Labor Board!! So I don’t know why it is even allowed on facebook!! It is also against the Law to send it out over the air-waves according to the FCC. I sure hope Xanga does NOT follow suit with facebook!!!
As a concerned paid “LIFE” member, ONE thing I hope Xanga changes is the offensive “Soft Porn” pictures it allows members to post. That is against moral ethics and is not what I have become accustomed to on Xanga.

the ads are terrible. it ruins having a blog. it clutters the page and makes the layout look disgusting. i know you probably have to have ads because it may be a free site..is there any way you could just have the ads on NON user pages? it makes me want to delete/leave xanga. i know im not the only one.
You kicked me out several times refusing my same old password. I finall created anther site only to hear that I would be asked t o go Premium. I went back to my old user name and changed my password. This was one of those, “If you can’t beat them, join them” I just think it unfair to change an old site who paid for a lifetime premium, without my permisison.

I am forced to return to the new private page but I miss the old one for many reasons
I wrote here one hour ago saying not any links worked on my left side bar , especially the links of my Site I Read list, neither for the foootprints , guestbook .etc .. And when I am on a friend’s page I cannot use the links on the left of his page !
The things look blocked everywhere .
