Driving More Traffic to Xangans - the Results!
Update (6/12/09): we've just updated the frontpage to use the overwhelming favorite: Top Blogs, Randomized. Thanks for all your input!A week ago we started an experiment using four different versions of the "Top Blogs" module to see which version drives the most traffic. Here are the results (note: these data represent a random sampling, not the actual number of clicks or users*):
Module Version Total Clicks Total Different Users 1) Top Blogs - Top 10, in Order 3,549 87 2) Top Blogs - Top 50-60, Randomized 3,103 340 3) Most Rec'd - Top 50-60, Randomized 3,018 230 4) Most Rec'd - Top 10, in Order 2,721 100 These data suggest that Top Blogs works better than Most Rec'd in general. But if you look closely at the data for the first two modules, the results are pretty astounding...
- The first version generated the most overall clicks, but performed worst out of all four versions on spreading those clicks around to different users.
- The second version had the second-highest number of clicks (with about 12.5% fewer clicks than the first version) but was the runaway leader in spreading around those clicks (it sent clicks to almost four times more users than the first version).
So now we need your help!
It looks like we'll probably want to go with one of the first two versions of the module, but which one do you think we should choose for the Xanga frontpage?
* In this experiment, we randomly assigned a subset of all Xanga visitors to one of the four versions of the module (a same number of visitors went into each group) and then tracked the data on those modules. As such, these results do not represent the actual total number of clicks or different users visited from Xanga's frontpage over the last week, but they should be a fair representation of the relative volume of clicks sent by each version of the module.

okay, i am just throwing this out there:
perhaps you could make a box like the featured box for the side, and have it switch between 1 and 2. that might be sort of difficult, but it would be pretty sweet.

Cool, I've definitely noticed more traffic coming from the front page. Neat to see the actual results.
I'd say if you had to choose only one... I suggest #2. More unique hits is great to have. It broadens the posting horizon for the community.
Though, I'd like to be able to switch between being in order and having random selection...
I'd personally go with #2, because it didn't generate that much LESS clicks than #1, but it generated a whole lot MORE clicks to different user sites. And that's what really helps spread traffic around.

I would like to see a Top blogs on say Lovelyish from the lovelyish members only. I'm starting to use my lovelyish page and I would like to be able to find friends/material on that site instead of just featured.

I had randomized Top Blogs and I didn't click on them very often. I found myself clicking on the Explore tab more often to see which blogs were in the top 10 or 15. So personally, I miss the Top 10 in order, but I can see that #2 is probably the better choice overall. *sigh* "It's not that I don't like change, I just don't like to be there when it happens."
Why don't you just fix what is broken (a lot of stuff, all over your site, has ongoing issues) and stop funneling traffic away from Xangan's via the -ish sites, if what you *really* want is more traffic to the users? I don't think that is really what you want, that's why. I think you like to talk about how that is what you want, and I think you like to pretend to be all hurt when someone posts a comment like this calling you out on it, but your behavior over the last several years is far more revealing. You don't really want to drive traffic to Xangan's blogs. You want to drive traffic to -ish site pages consisting largely of advertisements. That's great, that is your business, you can do what you want with it. But you need to stop and ask yourself, if those sites are going to generate so much income, when you suceed in destroying the very community that has made them possible.

Hmmm I know that I get lots of hits off of top Rec'd . But its up to you.
Combine number 1 and 2. Make the top ten list standard in order and throw in position 10-20 the a random selection of what lies in the 11-60 th position
I'm pretty easy going about the whole thing just do whatever you think is the easiest way to do the best thing for Xanga. I haven't been here nearly long enough to tell you what to do with something that major. For me personally I think it would be nice to have an area where you feature new Xangans to help them feel welcomed and remind us all to notice them. I also wish my feedback tab had more pages to it...and the all items tab seems redudant since the other three tabs already cover everything on it....and yeah give jaded back his featured video thingy whatever that was..... Thanks for making xanga great for us!
@john - Band-aids are designed to stop small scrapes from bleeding, too. But they won't help if an artery is hemorrhaging. Xanga is bleeding to death through the -ish sites. I feel bad for you guys, really, because I know you actually do care about the community, and have friends here. But for whatever reason, you aren't willing or aren't able to take the steps necessary to save it.

Whatever works best, but 2 is the best option and rec'd are overrated.
Number 2 is going to give you better overall net, plus it already includes the top 10 anyway. Seems the most efficient.
I dont mind, whatever brings the most traffic to us users (even the ones which do not get featured on the front page, which includes the featured entries)

99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of xanga users are NOT in the top 50 or 60. Try making a list of 10 randomized blogs on the front page instead of the 10 featured entries that stay up for days on end when they're only supposed to be there for 24 hours. Think about who you're appealing to before post an update next time.
The blogger jassmineis having trouble posting to their site. You should stop by and see if you can help.

Although I did see a version at one point during this testing time that had tabs, which I don't see as one of the four but I did see on my screen. I liked it the best, and would suspect touching a tab is quick enough to meet the needs of people's preference from among these display options? The default "open" tab would be whichever of the two options you say is your choice, and a tab could offer the runner up... just a thought.
I think a mix of #1 and #2 would be good.

What I have NOT liked is the automatic attempt to connect me to Facebook. I deliberately chose Xanga over Facebook and have no interest in going there. If I wanted to visit Facebook, I would do it without being redirected.

Hey, Xanga team. I'm not sure if you will see this comment but I just thought i'd leave a comment and let you know, my username was hacked yesterday and someone replied one of my messages to someone. Some of my friends on Xanga have been hacked lately too-- meaning someone is replying to their messages as well. I'm not sure whats going on but this totally scares me because I have no idea how they got my password. If you can investigate on this, I definitely think you should because this is really not good. I changed my pass but i'm afraid they will just try to go figure it out again. If you could look into this, i'd be glad to hear from you-- by email, comment, or message. Thanks very much for your time.
My site was hacked today, but the only thing the hacker did was reply to a message I got from heartlockette. I'm not sure how they got into my site or WHY they would. I'm not sure what you can do about this, but I know that other people have been getting "hacked" into as well, so I think it's becoming common. If you can do anything about this, get back to me please! Thanks.

Can you please put Vlogs and photos back up on the frontpage, since those features are increasingly becoming more popular than blogs.
Please stress networks and categories like facebook and livejournal does. Everything is so unorganized on Xanga. For example, before you post an entry you have to constrain it to a subject, such as politics, entertainment, life, etc. That way, a non-xangan can easily find articles on a particular subject they like, thus increasing traffic!
This is totally off the subject, but I don't know who to contact this about on the xanga team anymore.
That plug with Jesus and the rainbow flag is REALLY offensive to me...I really don't think things like that should be allowed as plugz at all. If things like this continue to be cleared as plugz, I will not hesitate to move my account somewhere else.

@AS90 - But what if something doesn't fit a specific subject? Some of my best blogs could be filed under multiple categories, or no category at all. And the same can be said for many xangans.

I hate the -ish sites!!!! Why not put 10 or so random blogs on the front page that are NOT the Top ones or whatever. I'm totally sick of the advertising. Just because there is a set 100 people or so that root for your way of doing things isn't what the rest of the ordinary, non advertising plane janes want. I'm about done with Xanga after having two accts over the past 7+years

Hey, here's an idea I keep forgetting to point out and ask you guys to do. Sometimes I get search engine referrals from outside xanga, and those people probably don't know how (it's not obvious) to pull up the main page, all they see is one post. I like the archive link on the main page, is there any way that can also show up with single posts? That way visitors can go directly to a list of posts without having to pull up the main page.
i thought this was a good idea (no. 2, what I see now) but I've almost completely stopped checking top blogs, because they're always just completely random and not anything I find interesting. Idk. Now I click on the "more top blog" link at the bottom so that I can still view them in order

I think it would be good to feature more voices. I imagine there's good content out there, but Xangans might not know how/might be a little unwilling to find it.

personally, i would LOVE a way to opt out of EVER seeing the front page. since the Xanga community is set on posting stuff i really don't care to see, i'd like the option of having a blank sign-in page that just has the Xanga logo and the fields to enter my log-on information. the top page is an inch away from being my reason to leave Xanga. i understand it is a social networking site, but i am also sure i am not the only one who takes offense with some of the top blogs (their titles are enough to make my skin crawl sometimes.) and would like a bit of consideration. thanks for keeping us uptight, prudish folks in mind.

You are implimenting a lot of good ideas but could you fix some of our sites. Mine the editor is supersized to the point there is no scroll button. Photos disappear. Sometimes I have manual to put up the photos sometimes it is automatic. Several of my friends you can't see their photos at all. Check out this site. I keep seeing the same blogs over and over again. You know, I'd probably end up seeing them regardless if they were on the front page as "top blogs". So, let there be some new blood out there. Give us something interesting. The top 50-60 randomized gives us more of a chance to read something new and meet people that we otherwise would not.
I'm just getting tired of seeing the same exact content everywhere I turn. I usually see the top 10 on the ish sites, and through recommendations before I ever notice they're on the front page. And when I check the front page to see if there's anything interesting, I realize I've read it all before.
So, definitely #2.

Hey Xanga Team, you mind offering an explanation on why I was removed from Top Blogs? I think within a 24 hour period, that one post got over 1300 hits and over 100 comments (excluding my own). This morning, I was in the top 3, now I can't find it anywhere.
It leads me to 2 conclusions:
1). I cuss too much and therefore you have taken me off; thereby censoring me.
2). If you censored me, you're fucking lame.
I'm not some attention whore that needs to be on the front page, but the idea of taking me off for what seems no good reason makes me want to cuss more. Please come back with a fucking real explanation so that I might stop fucking cussing like this. I have an appointment with my pastor this afternoon and I'm afraid he might take some offense to me taking the Lords name in vain...Jesus Fucking Christ.

The major thing lost is the interaction of the community.As most people are looking at the ish sites because they are the put on the xanga front page.

I NEVER look at the front page: there is usually something smutty or an objectionable topic there that I don't care to see let alone let my children look at. So I have no opinion whatsoever as to what they do with it. JMHO.

From Institutions to Freedom tells the story of Roger Heater who has lived with IED for over three decades
As a child Roger suffered from temper tantrums and rage attacks, what began as tantrums banging his head on the floor ended in rage attacks flipping furniture over and destroying his bedroom. These attacks lasted thirty minutes to two hours sometimes. At times his parents were forced to sit on him and hold him down so he wouldn’t cause any damage to himself, or them. By age 12 he was made a ward of the court and spent the next four years being shuffled around shelters, group homes, mental institutions, and psychiatric hospitals throughout the State of California, during which time he experienced several different forms of discipline and medications. In the 70’s Roger was placed in an institution where they mixed mentally handicap adults with kids. At age 13 he was living with adults as old as 70. Being stripped of his belt, shoes and pockets emptied, he was placed in a 7’ by 4’ room with no outside window or door knob on the inside. He was restrained on beds by being wrapped in sheets from the ankles to his neck. As early as 9 years old he was subjected to several different anti-depressants including Ritalin, Valium and Lithium.
Over the next 15 years he self medicated with marijuana that he began to smoke excessively from as early as age 14. It seemed to control his hyper energy and aggressive behavior. By age 19 his impulsive and addictive personality began to crave drug- cocaine. Four years later after almost overdosing one evening, he began a self therapy treatment that involved one day at a time of not touching the drug and performing at local amateur comedy clubs throughout the Bay area. Just like marijuana, comedy became an excellent outlet to release his extra aggression. By age 34 with two addictive drug habits and two failed marriages behind him, the comedy stage alone was no longer enough to keep his anger under control. His aggressive and abusive behavior landed him into a psychiatric hospital twice within a 6 month period.
3 decades of Roger's IED incidents-
Age 4; Temper tantrums began, Roger would lay flat on his stomach and repeatedly bang his head on the floor, his mother had to hold him until he calmed down.
Age 11; He was running head first into walls, destroying his room so bad that everything was removed except his bed and dresser.
Age 16; Roger took out 32 car windshields with a baseball bat causing over $5000.00 worth in damages.
In his early 20's after receiving a hamburger with mayo at a Jack in the Box drive-thru, he threw it back at the server and sped off in a screaming road rage into heavy expressway traffic almost causing a three car pileup.
In his early 20's to mid 30's he mentally and physically attacked 3 separate wives. During a rage attack he was known to lift wives up off the floor by their throats.
After struggling for over three decades, he was finally given a diagnosis in 1995. He was told he had a mental disorder called Intermittent Explosive Disorder. (I-E-D). This disorder was still unknown to the public and researchers at the time, so proper medications and therapy were still in the testing stage. Over the years while learning what he could about the disease he taught himself how to overcome and survive living with it. After more than 14 years of touring and performing comedy all over the United States, he developed a strong ability to keep any size groups attention and his strong stage presence continues to shine even when delivering material on a much darker subject. His sense of humor, passion and understanding for this disorder stands out in every delivery.
Roger is in the process of writing his book- “From Institutions to Freedom” in the hopes that sharing his story with others will motivate and show others that instead of ‘you can’t’ -you can!

I don't like how all the things I see on the front-page feels like deja vu. "Didn't I read an entry like this before?" Yeah...like every single friggin' day.
And I've noticed that it's so EASY to get on an -ish front-page. You just talk about stuff everyone else talks about and make it more interesting and BAM, you're on the Xanga front-page eventually. That's how it was when I had a datingish account. No surprise there.
If you insist on keeping the -ish sites, which I'm sure is just for a way to make more money (which I don't blame you), at LEAST make it harder for an entry on some random -ish site to make it to the Xanga front-page. I really don't care about which thong looks better, or how there's so many kids on Halo 3 that are too young to play the game. Give me the REAL thought out stuff. The stuff that people dedicate a lot of their time to make it on the Xanga front-page. I admire the people who continually make entries that people would enjoy, even though they don't get close to getting featured. Sometimes, I view the most recent entries and give people comments because although I highly admire the people who are well known throughout Xanga, I also say that it's time to start letting other people be given a chance.

Do you ever plan to fix "Themes"????? I have two blogs on here and neither one will let me "start a new theme", it lets me name it and describe it, then when I click on "remix theme" to start actually incorporating a theme it just says "processing" FOREVER. I think it's kind of ridiculous that you want everyone to switch over to this new layout but it's buggy as all get out and you never do anything about it! Please fix themes or decide to do away with it so everyone at least has the same functions.

I have been a part of Xanga for a while now with many sites. I love this website to pieces. But this is really starting to irritate me to the extreme. I am sick of jumping from site to site, or using freind's lock. I shouldn't have to pack up and move my site because of other people. I have been ignoring this for the most part, but I have enough stress in my life. I can't keep dealing with this group of people that makes random stalker sites to look over my Xanga. I'm not sure why they do it. And since it's a random stalker site, composed of random letters and numbers, I cannot pinpoint who it is exactly, and obviously, the block button at some point doesn't work. You block someone, they make a new site. It's so easy to do. I'm so fed up with this I'm thinking about leaving Xanga, which is something I really don't want to do. I'm not sure how to approach this. It's a double edged sword. If you block them, they make new sites. If you ignore them, they keep at it. It's stressing me out. I'm snapping at people I've made friends with here because this one group of people won't drop this internet fight that happened like. When? It started in 2007 I think. I don't mean to rant and ramble. You guys are porbably busy with other things. I just think I need some form of outside help at this point.

I came to xanga.com from some blog and show the list of favorite blogs on homepage. I clicked almost all post to read whatever was there on the blog. So its a good feature you have implemented.
May I suggest something? Can we have 'comments' on the feedback log? I know you guys have eprops, but it'd be nice to know how many comments we get in a day/week.

I like option 1 best. Although it makes for some eletism, it give people something to work for and then rewards them for achieving it.
It's possible to do a lot of various things to improve overall. I don't ever go to the ish sites because it's pointless to comment them, too many opinionated folks there. If someone has a genuine interest in that stuff, fine by me. I would rather see the new people who blog substance get more exposure. I have built up 600 friends and I always try to drive traffic to those newbies I feel are worthy of notice. So I think it is our collective responsibility to help each other. Just level the playing field and let us do what we do best.
I'd limit the amount of rec's any one can do to maybe 3 per day, that way it's more likely to be a rec that means something. Continue to do top blogs though because it greatly helps to connect us to good posts that we otherwise wouldn't see. I rarely get mine on top blogs but yesterday and today I hit number two, and now have 27 new friends I wouldn't have had otherwise. It make you blog better when you know over 600 people are going to see it.
My only concern would be that it might make things kind of static - if you give publicity based on hits, and that leads to more hits, that starts "snowballing" and effectively locks blogs into the top spots.
You could use 1 and 2 by putting them together. List the top 10 blogs in order and from 20-50 list the top blogs in random. You would get the high clicks on the top 10 and also use more xanga users for the 20-50 top blogs. Win/Win to me.

@beetunes - That would be sweet! But if it isn't an option, my vote is for number 2. A lot of top blogs regularly hit the top ten list, but there are equally great ones within the 50/60 range.
Damn. You people could've just write a whole new blog about the results instead of reusing/updating the old one. Some comments are months old and don't relate to the current results.

Increase Traffic
I would suggest the Top Blogs, Most Rec'd, and add Most Viewed be done a bit differently.
Whoever makes the top 100 list should have a profile pic on the left, then in spreadsheet fashion, have a snippet of the post on the right of the pic, followed by a column for views, a column for comments, and a column for rec's.
One of the main things we should do is figure out a way to get some new bloggers on the front page though. Perhaps we could poll the Top Bloggers as to whom they would suggest for this in order to drive some traffic to their sites.
Also, I would ban all the Thinspo crap, it's irresponsible to have that on Top Blogs or most Rec'd or Featured Content.
