Personal Search and Customizable Home Pages, now in Beta!
A few exciting announcements:
1. Personal Search is now on your private page!
Now you can easily search all of your own posts, right from your private page… premium users can sneak a peek at the beta here:
Just change your “Your Home” setting, and click save… you’ll see the new search module in the upper left of your private page.
2.Customizable Home Pages are in beta too!
You can easily customize your new private page to look fancy… kinda like custom look and feel used to work. We’ve been dying to bring something like this back for a long time, so this is really exciting!
3. Private Messages Cleaned up
While cleaning up the private pages, we did a major overhaul of the private messages page. A few highlights:
- The order of messages in threads have been reversed to show newer message on bottom. Basically it looks and works a bit more like gmail.
- Older messages automatically collapse in long threads (you can click to open them)
- Profile pics now appear in every message, instead of just the most recent one in a thread
4. Friends Manager overhauled
We overhauled the Friends Manager too. Not only is it much faster, but it also has a thumbnails and a list sort…
Friends also now has an option to search.
5. Lots of little tweaks
There is also a lot more consistency in the new interface… little things like:
- The navigation is much more consistent across sections. We are standardizing on six major “tabs” along the top, all of which are in the new look and information architecture.
- Item management (e.g. messages and friends) have more consistent UI elements.
- We trimmed a bit of space between items in the universal inbox, so they take up less vertical space.

Whoa, this new home page is definitely more newer/fresh looking. I’ll stick with it for now and see if I can get used to it, but so far so good. I’m very happy you can search through your friends list now. That would be annoying to do in the past.

I like everything about it so far, except that the text is very small. I can hold Ctrl and scroll to zoom, but it’s kind of a pain.
I still like the old private page better. The moment the old private page is no longer accessible is the moment I leave Xanga.
One of the first things I noticed was the recent visitors module. Very cool, I think that was a great idea.
And having a featured question at the top was a smart move. I used to do FQ’s a lot when they first started, but tired of going to look for them. Another good idea.
Overall, I like it.

@The44thHour - That’s odd. My text size is set to largest and zoom at 100%, And I have to scroll up to 125% to read it. But only on the new Beta homepage. Hmmmmm.
Love it! Switched to new Beta Private, changed everything to a darker color so I can see it better. Love the new layout.

It’s almost insane how much space you squeezed out of the Recent Weblogs module. I am in LOVE with all this space before the fold.
I like it. I like all these changes you are making.
I would like to see you drop off the featured question. Why should the featured question be a higher priority than the people we are subscribed to? You are making it the number one priority at the top.
But the rest is good. I also like the messages at the top. I also like the fact that you kept the text small.
Nice touches. Thanks for the changes.

Except for the smallness of the text, I love the new features. Might just be something I have to get used to.
It looks like when you delete a message now that the whole exchange deletes. That is new too? That is awesome because now we can go back and mass delete messages?
I like the changes, particularly the recent visitors and the organization in the friends’ list.
However, one thing I noticed is that your last name shows up in the friends’ lists of others. That’s something that should be fixed. In our profile it says our last names would not be shown publicly. I expected that to mean anywhere, including in my friends’ lists. So I went and deleted my last name from there.
I really like this stuff, thank you! I’m enjoying the customized look. It’s definitely less white space, less scrolling to the stuff I’m interested in tracking most (like comments, footprints, etc), and I love having the big buttons for messages/subs/etc at the top. Very classy.
The options to customize are so fun, too! And really easy, which is important, because I’m a lost cause when it comes to code. :p
All in all, YES PLEASE!

As a theme maker, will theme sets be a possibility in the future?
I like the way it looks! Nice streamlining! I do agree with TheTheologiansCafethat having the Featured Question at the top seems greatly out of place. It would be nice to have the option (premium feature, maybe) to turn that off.
Quick question though… is there a way to quickly navigate through messages? For instance, it’ll take me a thousand clicks (obvious exaggeration) to go back and read a message from April 2009. It would be nice to have the ability to just jump to a date.

I like it, but my friends stuff was way off to the left side, and the bar wouldn’t let me scroll that way.
I had been having some difficulty accessing my settings, but this fixed that so thanks!
Cool beans, I love Xanga still no matter how many people are using it. I prefer to stick with the old classic sites, than using something more popular regularly.
To quote mcdonalds… “I’m Lovin’ it”
for the most part, I love it.
I have two complaints so far-1) my font shrunk. not cool.
2) the text at the side has changed to a pale grey which makes it even harder to read. also not cool.
I really like the rest of it tho-much better flow (when I can see it)
When are you gonna let non-premium members have Google Adsense?
The beta is cool but I wonder why the toolbar on top is so big and clunky… why not keep it small like the old style one?
On another note (not related to the beta)… the menus on the top toolbar are still the old format on the photo manager pages. It’s confusing having different options in different places all over the site. It would be great if we had one toolbar across the board…
the cleaner interface is nice… is the beta only for premium users at this time?

As one of the Old Private Page holdouts, I am glad to say that I will be switching over to the new private page. Very attractive changes there.
I mostly like it.
I don’t like the HUGE nav bar at the top, though. Can’t it just match the other pages? I like the look of everything being all tidy and matching.
I also miss the bolded text on weblog/pulse/message in the universal inbox.
But overall, nice.

@radicalramblings - yup, that’s the goal: to get everything into the same navigational structure. It’s particularly jarring at the moment to go from the beta system into one of those older page (which is part of the reason we’re releasing this first set of updated pages as a limited beta). But we hope to get *all* the pages using the same structure (except for the *old* private home, which will still be available for those who prefer it).
I am really liking the new home page, but there is one thing I miss. The list of recent weblogs no longer shows the time they were posted. Is it possible to get that back?
@saintvi - we had to make some careful cuts to that module to try and use up as little space as possible… The timestamp actually turned out to take up a lot of space – and we figured you had a general sense of when you published your own posts – so we hid the timestamp in favor of showing your view & comment counts (so you could watch how each of your recent posts was doing). But we’ll take it under consideration… this type of feedback is part of what a beta is all about – thanks!

Sweet… I like the idea.
I would like to see xanga gmail. That is we would all have e-mail accounts through xanga. Such as mine would be magistertom@xanga.com, but it would be run in Google apps with a custom mail.xanga.com login page for example, and maybe a customized interface and in the address book we would have a list of xanga contacts from our friends and subscriptions.

I’d love to see better function for the messaging in general — a way to lookup usernames when addressing messages, a better way to page through messages, etc.
I’d also love to see some tweaks to the photo manager along those same lines — just faster ways to get through the pictures if (like me) you have 35 or 40 “pages” of photos stored on Xanga! And more options for batch changes.
Anyway — props on the current upgrades.

So wait, only Premium users get to experience the beta for now, right? Because I can’t for the life of me see that option under my account information. It’s pretty late at night and I’m exhausted/sleepy, so maybe I’m just overlooking something. Or just plain stupid. :b

The only thing that I don’t like is how there isn’t a next/previous button on the top of the subscriptions. You have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page now!
I wonder why our subs list is buried so far down the page & the blogrings (which are useless for the most part since you can’t submit posts to them anymore) are occupying a more prominent spot?
I just clicked on every single plug appearing on my new beta private homepage. Every single one of them goes to the Xanga front page. I think there’s a problem…
@radicalramblings - ah, that’s a bug specific to the “new.xanga…” domain used for the beta testing – plugz should still be working for anyone on the older home pages (that use http://www.xanga...). We’ll get it fixed up on new.xanga though – thanks!
@radicalramblings - this one was a bit of a coin flip for us (frankly both of those modules have limited utility)… we ended up putting the subs module below the blogrings module because subs are already present in the most dominant module on the page – the universal inbox itself… because blogrings appear nowhere else but that module, we ended up giving it slight priority over that quasi-redundant subscriptions list. But I’m adding your thoughts to the list of beta feedback for further consideration now!
@marc - Thanks. I’ll elaborate a bit more on why I questioned it. I like having a list of the sites I sub to (i.e. the subs module). The universal inbox is always a mess (due to timestamping, and people that post multiple pulses in a row, etc.) so that really doesn’t serve as a list. I can glance at the list & click on the one I like to go see (maybe that’s my problem… I still go visit the sites I sub to?). The blogrings have very little functionality and at least in the ones I belong to, the vast majority of sites in them are not related to the topic at all (it’s more like people join the blogrings of things they like, sort of like pages on facebook). That’s why I don’t consider that a priority module.
Regarding the plugz, I hadn’t realized it was on a different domain, that would explain things. No biggie… as long as you’re aware of it

I much enjoy the revision to the home page, but it’s a taaaad skinny in my browser/with my resolution at a width of 1024.
and, considering the mini-feed updates don’t quite reach the bottom of the page–might it be possible for the user to choose how many to see at one time, or to increase the # for everybody, possibly?

and it won’t let me! so please fix whatever is wrong. i need a profile picture.

Search is great! I’ve been using it since i noticed it and that brought me here.
What happenned to Metros? I need to read blogs acording to location, like when a huracan reaches Texas. People are goint to post pictures of their neighborhood.
