Three Tweaks to Private Pages
We’ve been tweaking the universal inbox on people’s private pages, in response to your feedback!
1) We’ve increased the number of items on the universal feed from 15 to 20
We got this suggestion from several Xangans. The basic idea: since we’re only displaying a snippet of the blog title, it’s pretty easy to scan the feed and so there’s room for more than 15.
So we inched the number of items on the page up to 20. Let us know what you think!
2) We’re removing ads from the private pages for premium users.
Xanga Premium allows members to hide ads on their public pages.
Some Premium members have asked to hide ads on their private pages as well. So starting now, we’re going to start hiding ads on your private pages too (your private home, subs, etc.).
Yay?
3) We’re moving ads down in the universal inbox for classic users.
When we’ve run big ad campaigns in the past, we’ve shown ads on people’s private feeds after the first three items.
We’re going to move those ads down lower on the page, so that they appear after five items instead of three.

Moving the ad down is a good idea. It’s now out of sight until I scroll down (depending on screen settings) instead of blasting my eyes as soon as I open the home page.
One thing I’ve never learned is how to search for users by their screen names (say, someone who isn’t in my friends or subscribers list but I remember their name). The search box will only bring up references to bloggers in posts and comments, never the blog itself. Any suggestions?
I really like that you are showing more updates per page. LOVE IT!!
But as for the occasional ads on the private page? I think most people are just lookingfor something to complain about.
The JC Penny ad was annoying in itself because it was always moving. But having an ad right there was no big deal to me.

The mandatory new homepage is terrible. It’s cluttered and only works in certain browser dimensions. You should at least give us the option to change it back.

Hmmm, I still have an ad on my subscriptions page and I’m a premium user. Is there something I should do to get rid of that? It’s not a big deal; I was just curious after reading this entry about the ads.

I like that there are no longer ads on my private page. But at the same time, I like Xanga, so I dont want it to hurt Xanga… So I think it is both good and potentially bad.

I really enjoy the changes you’ve made. I wish you would make a change in the “Feedback, Comments” section, where if another person responds to a comment i’ve made somewhere, i can view their full response on my private page.
I don’t know how often it happens, but i commented on a blog, and another blogger replied, and i couldn’t access the reply because the blog i left my comment on had been closed down. However, the notification for the reply still sits in my private feedback page with about 4 words and an elipses just teasing me.
The reply to my comment is for me weither that blog is closed or not. I should be able to access it, is what i’m sayin.

@marc - Oh goodness, I just went and checked and they are gone now! I kept checking earlier, just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, and the ad was always right in the middle of my subscriptions, just after the first post. But I just rechecked it and they are gone. Sorry about that! Thanks for the fast reply!
I love the attempt on improvement but the ads on the private pages are extremely annoying

All good changes so far, especially number two. I was never happy about paying for premium services and still getting ads. Although it would still be nice to not get ads from you guys on my private page, considering at least half of them are for upgrading to premium since I already have that.
All good thanks. How about addressing the spate of SPAM of late. I had 72 SPAM viagra comments yesterday alone on posts as old as 3 years. What a pain!

All three ideas are good stuff. Not sure if this is related, but ever since that change I no longer can go a page back on my feedback pages. Eh? That could be an issue later.
Hooray! I like the idea of being able to view more updates in my universal inbox on each page. Because I’ll be viewing things on one page. Flip to the next, and then I have to go back to the page I was just on to make sure I didn’t miss anything…

The updates are welcome, as usual.
But I’d be even more grateful if several of the more relevant issues on Xanga (see: what people spend most of the Top Blog space addressing) could be fixed, as well. I’d like to see Xanga return to what it used to be when I first joined 5-ish years back, in terms of popularity and relevance. Because our community is an amazing one–but no one outside of Xanga is aware of it.

Maybe you guys should put a “report” link beside the “reply” option with each comment. So when people like this leave spam comments, we can report them as such. Then you guys can do whatever. Remove the comment, remove the blogger, whatever.

Thanks for all your work, guys. I don’t like ads any more than most people, but I know they’re at least somewhat necessary. I’m glad I don’t have to see them anymore on my universal inbox, but I appreciate the need for making a decision like that.

Might we have the ability to (as in.. like what youtube offers commenters) flag comments as spam [then after enough votes--automatically hide the comment]/report them?
err….. too much new 2.0 coding? (I’m familiar with HTML, but not so much PHP/any programming language, so I can’t guesstimate either way)
other requests: Multiple protected lists/the ability to choose for only certain “lists” to read certain posts? Possibly?
Not as important for myself, personally, but… is XTV still broken across the board?
