'rings of the 2000s
Just a heads up: we've gotten a lot of questions over the years asking, "What's a blogring?" So we're going to rename them to be a bit more clear: "groups".
Marc and I were chatting about this earlier, and we remembered that the term was a play on "webring". The Wikipedia entry on webrings kinda nailed that 'rings of all kind are on the decline:
"A webring (or web ring) is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure, and usually organized around a specific theme, often educational or social. They were popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, particularly among amateur websites, but have since become quite rare."
In 2003, Gollum even bit off the One Ring and destroyed it within the volcanic fires of Mount Doom. So as you can see, it hasn't been a good decade for 'rings.
In any case, we'll be making the transition very carefully so as to try to not break any scripts people have installed. Just a courtesy heads up, in case you were wondering...

Glad to see they're not going away. Maybe I'll use mine again (and maybe other people will too!)
I remember Blogrings and never thought what it meant, but thanks for explaining it
the ring will hold you to your word

A ring is round, it has no end.
Interesting. I did not know that.
@Xenga_Boss - it has no beginning either! so has it always been?
I haven't checked in on the blogrings I'm a part of for about four years lol. It would be cool to see them make a comeback.
"the transition" to what???
This is a good idea for some people who don't know what it was.
@guestbrief - the transition to the new name: groups. that's all.
ok, that's cool.
aw i like the name blogrings. it's cute. but i understand you guys need to keep up with the facebook-like times. honestly the fact that people couldn't figure out what they were worries me. blog...ring... isn't it self explanatory? byebye blogrings.

I'm still attached to blogrings now(from the past)..but I don't think anyone hardly cares about them anymore. Still, I knew what they are even if they aren't in use anymore.
I'm sure some blogrings are inactive. Have you given any thought of doing a clean up? Although I'm sure you folks have better things to do with your time.
You realize this post had "nerd" written all over it?
@TheTheologiansCafe - Are you using the word "nerd" in a negative sense? Cause if so, you're using it wrong. Nerd may have been something bad in the past, but in modern days, nerd means awesome.
Just thought you'd like to know.
DFTBA
@TheTheologiansCafe - Nationally educated radical dood?
@The44thHour - nerds are awesome!
@livefastbleedslow - I couldn't agree with you more. I think it makes perfect sense what a blogring is. I'm sad to see the name change. I enjoyed the variety.
Hahaha, how cute! I see why it's called 'blogrings' now! ... mmn, I've always known that it was just... like a group/community/club type of thing, for years.. but never quite thought of it that way... heh, I love Lord of the Rings, heh ..... and although I haven't really touched my blogrings err groups .. in forever, I still love to see it under my page
it brings back good memories! Hopefully it'll become more active now! ... tho honestly speaking, I quite like how it was called "blogrings" ... just because, in a way, it's unique. Unique to Xanga. It wasn't just some generic/general term to refer to "groups" ... mmn. it felt special. but that's just me...
... well, whatever floats your boat, Xanga! and g'luck with the transitions! I trust Xanga's Team to make the right changes around here
..... I think that's what I love about Xanga - the way it operates, the way it stays true to its members, the way it tries to make changes for the BETTER enjoyments of its members, and the way it gives room for its members to have CHOICES ... rather than forcing on new & fancy changes on their members .... .... for all the years I've been with Xanga, I can't really recall an instance... where there was an update/change that I disliked very much / couldn't get used to ... that made me want to leave this place (well, I remember when the 'chat' thing was first introduced. I didn't like it, because I couldn't hide it, so I didn't like it. but now, tho I can't remove it completely without a premium, at least, it can be hidden on the side, and it's not within my sight at all time.. /etc/ ... or like, when the new layout system was first introduced... I was worried that I would be pushed into using the new system altogether ... and have to "learn to get used to the new system" ... but turns out that Xanga had given people a choice; I could just continue using the "old school" system that I've always loved. So I'm happy, no complaints. Also, I love how they still try to update the "oldschool" system here and there, and hasn't completely abandon it yet...! like the way the menu/navigation was cleaned up ... it makes it look neater/cleaner/easier to navigate.. and I just want to throw this out there as well - Xanga went through some changes here and there with their front home page.. I quite like it as it is now ... and it doesn't change as often as some of the other blogging sites I've seen/used (like every 3 months/few weeks... or whatever??) ... but I think.. of all the other blogging places, Xanga's front page is the only one I actually would look at, and pay attention to... there's always something interesting to read about, or to look at, just.. eye catchy things..! (not to mention clean/organized fashion)..
Ahhhh I just went into a tl;dr ramble )8
... in short: I love Xanga! Thank you for always doing an awesome job, Xanga/Team ...!
btw, loving the way everyone's talking about "nerds" here, haha.. got quite a good few laughs
... silly people ... Xanga has such a ... cute.. community / members. hmmn.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Was it the Wikipedia or the Tolkien that put me over the edge? Haha it was probably the super combo of Wikipedia PLUS the Tolkien, FTW!
@The44thHour - ah, DFTBA - Nerdfighters FTW!
@john - Just in time for what's to come down the road with that 'other' site.
Good to know where the term came from too. Nice upgrade to current semantics.
I didn't see that the blogrings/groups were that active anyway. But I love nostalgia and I like that they stick around.
Once upon a time, I was in a webring of 100. Now there's five who are still active.
I think this process could be greatly improved by supplying either pancake snacks or cheese doodles to those affected. I prefer cheese doodles.
Webrings! I'd forgotten about those.
I am consistently being thrown back to the front page of Xanga with the message
"Sorry, the page you requested could not be found"
What is going on with Xanga?
By the way you will have to be more innovative to make blogrings or groups to work. Currently it is a dormant and unuseful feature.
What about Propwhore? Can we still use the word Propwhore?
Just wanna inform you Xanga Team that we can't disable our friends invite link. I chose the 'no' option, and still get the stupid friends add invites!!
And please, please, please make the subscribe link an option. I do not like lurkers and strangers subscribing to me. Give us the option to deny subscriptions without blocking or cutting out friends.
It would be nice if you re-enabled the features that were removed from blogrings- such as being able to send out invites for new members to join a particular ring.
@Princess_Of_The_Orient - If you enable "friends lock", only people on your friends list will be able to visit or subscribe to your site
I disabled the friends invites button. Why am I still getting friends invites? I have my sign in lock on and I'm still getting the invites. I don't like people forcing their friendship on me while at the same I don't want the friends lock on! Also why can't we block subscription to our sites? I'm sick of rejecting friends invites and I'm sick of getting rid of unwanted subscribers. I don't want the friends lock on, I don't want friends invites and I don't want subscribers. Period.
@SoullFire - I don't want a friends lock on. I still want to be visible, with or without the sign-in lock on, but I don't want any friends invites or subscribers.
@The_Mysterious_Lady - Exactly. We want to reject all friends invites and subscriptions to our sites without putting the friends lock on.
@Princess_Of_The_Orient - Does that mean you want people to be able to see and and visit you, but not be able to subscribe? But if someone can visit you freely, isn't that the same as subscribing?

their relatively low level of writing. After seeing your article, I tried to
