  • No more Share, but if you want it... a Like

We had a "Share" button on Xanga sites for a few years, so that people could share public posts with their friends on various social media sites. We did some digging into the data though, and found out not many people were using the share buttons.... so we took 'em down a few months ago.

We kept on digging into the data though, and noticed that the Facebook Like button had been driving a growing amount of traffic. So we created a setting which gives you the choice over whether or not to display a Facebook Like button on your posts:

The new feature won't go live til the end of the week or so, but the settings are already live. If you don't want the Like button to show (or if you're like me and just don't like Facebook), just set your setting to "no"... and nothing at all will change. You can find the setting here:

  • THANK YOU for making an opt out of this!!  I do NOT want my stuff on facebook, at all.  Xanga is a separate entity!

  • no no no.. Xanga is no way facebook :D

  • Xanga is so much more personal then Facebook. I'd hate for ANY of my stuff to be on there. Thanks for making the option to opt out of this one!

  • I will never link my Xanga to Facebook. Thank you for this!

  • I used to link my public posts (few as they are) to facebook.  I will miss this feature, but I know there are other ways to do it.

  • Oh, wasn't this option already available?  I remember using it back in September or October last year.

  • Stop making Xanga another Facebook. Don't be a copycat. Be original.

  • i pre-like this.

  • I understand adding new features and linking to fb but like others have mentioned, I don't want my content linked to fb EVER!  I have one or two Xanga friends that don't mind mixing their friends from fb and Xanga but many others want Xanga to be the place that they can share with their selected online friends instead of sharing with all of their annoying relatives or friends from 20 years ago.  Xanga is more of a safe place.

Thanks for giving us the option to choose.

  • I enjoy doing the xanga-FB link occassionally but I can understand why most people wouldn't. Xanga seems to be more of an escape than an addition to real life for most people here. I use it as an extension of my real life, personally, but I think I'm in the minority.

If I have the like button on my posts, I assume I can like my posts with my own FB account and share my posts on my FB wall that way?

  • Is that option there now?  I used your link and I don't see it.

  • OK, I looked again and I found it.  Again, thanks for the option!

  • Dear Team,

I was multitasking as usual and nearly spit out a whole mouthful of hot tea all over my computer desk at work when I read "...or if you're like me and just don't like Facebook." That's the best laugh so far today.

While it doesn't surprise me in the least of course that Xanga "doesn't like Facebook" I want to announce that I don't like it either. Every time I walk up the aisle, all the computer screens in all the cubicles seem to be displaying FarmLand or HamburgerLand or whatever. Drones for the drones. People don't socialize on FB. They follow the herd. Frankly, I get jittery whenever I "go over there". My purpose for FB is so I can stream an RSS feed of my Xanga blog to those "friends" who left here for there. (Maybe they even read an entry or two when they're not trading sheep with the other sheep.)

And so having a "like" button for FB is a good idea. More traffic to more Xanga pages. I was going to input the code long ago on my entries but forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder, and for doing the code insertion for me. LOL.

    I like.

  • @skanickadee - it should be right under the option to allow users to give you Xanga Minis...

@TheMarriedFreshman - yup, you'll be able to like your own posts

  • How the fart can you NOT like Teh Facebook?

  • I like facebook like I like email, for breif communications, communication with distant family or on getting together with friends.

Xanga is where I communicate and really express myself and blog. It may not be for my friends in real life to see - but thats with purpose. I dont need people I know to make bias about me - here... I get an unbiased opinion (in most cases) even if I dont always like it.
That, and I dont have to worry about peeps snoopin' in my life.

  • Yeah I saw that. Switched it to no already. Facebook isn't terrible, but I'd like to keep my Xanga and Facebook separate.

  • @marc - Thanks - I found it!

  • Thanks, Xanga. :)

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

  • I would "like" it if I could upload pictures, edit my profile pic, edit my theme (they all result in a blank white screen) and if the blog post editor worked right. You know, if the basics on here ever worked correctly.

Why would anyone ever pay for premium when so much doesn't work right? And it's not just me, I see comments to that effect frequently.

A positive comment for balance: Xa still has is over FB for my purpose in having a blog.

  • Thank you so, so, so much for making this feature optional. It would be horrible if my xanga stuff ended up on facebook. One of the things I love about xanga is that you don't force stuff like this on people, instead always leaving the decisions up to us individually. Great work as usual.

  • I use Google Chrome and found that the Facebook posting option stopped working a couple of months ago. I don't like the "like" option because of the way it appears in the FB feed. Is this being fixed?

  • There's still the 'Share Page' on the stupid chatbar. I don't wanna share my blogs to facebookers or non-Xangans, you fucking idiots!

  • What's the difference between like and rec?

  • Yeah thank you for making an opt out option because if I had to worry about my stuff here ending up there, there would be no reason to be here. These are 2 seperate worlds....as in all those relatives you sort of "have to" friend THERE are not HERE. Thank Goodness!

  • thank you. also, perhaps a small cosmetic facelift to the opening screen for xanga might be nice?

  • NikBv and Shimmybodycream are online and cyberbullying on people. If you Xanga Team don't do your job and shut them down, then this matter will be brought to Facebook and courts.

  • NikBv and Shimmerbody are using my country Malaysia's name to insult people. They are using the word
'Malaysian' like 'nigger' or 'fag'. They are trolling on people right this moment calling them faggots and other degrading terms. Please stop cyberbullying and trolling in Xanga. If Malaysia is able to convict a Xangan Seah Boon Khim @ hokongchan67, a cyberbully in 2009, why can't you Americans?

  • A number of Xangans have been the subject of trollings and cyberbullyings, particularly regarding Malaysian's anti-trolling/cyberbullying policies. Xangans such as TheTheologiansCafe, ItIsAllGravy, NikBv, Shimmerbodycream amongst others are constantly harassing Malaysians and making comments and blogs that made fun of Malaysians like me. I found their actions very rude and offensive.

Why Xanga is allowing cyberbullies like these continue to exist is beyond my understanding. We are suppose to be more tolerant and understanding with each other, be courteous and try not to offend people of other beliefs, races and nationalities. People said to us : "You need to develop a thick skin." It's funny but for us Malaysians, we tell each to have a 'soft heart' or 'hati lembut' which means we must not be hard hearted and try to be more empathic and kind. 'Thick skin' is not our way. It's only for people who are ignorant and who prefer to look 'the other way' or in our words 'tutup sebelah mata'.

Because of their harassments, 2 of my beloved Malaysian friends Ashley (x_Reckless_x) and Audrey (GoldSilk) decided to shut down their Xanga sites and leave Xanga. How many other Malaysians do you want to leave Xanga because of these cruel, cold and heartless anti-Malaysians cyberbullies?

Don't tell me to ignore them. Don't me that they are only joking. If they are joking, then why am I not laughing? Is it because I can't take a 'trolling'? Sorry, 'trolling' is not part of our culture. There's not even a Malay translation for 'troll'.

It really, really hurts to see people making fun of us Malaysians and my country Malaysia. I am proud to be Malaysian, but why can't you like Malaysians in Xanga? Why the hate against us? What have Malaysia and Malaysians done to your country?

Be kind. Be courteous. Be a good Xangan.

  • @Scarlet_Lipstick - O_o I've never called anybody a faggot. I did get called both a Nazi and a faggot by you folks earlier today, though...

  • the staff just figured out how popular the facebook like button is?

  • @NikBv - You said a lot more, we all saw the screencaps of your trollings together with Shimmerbodycream and coinscarf. You can deny everything, but the screencaps are the proof you are targeting certain people and harassing them by calling them 'Malaysian'. You hate us Malaysians.

I don't know why you are targeting Malaysians and taunting a Colombian and an Israeli by calling them Malaysians. If you hate us so much, make a complain to the Malaysian Embassy, don't use the 'Malaysian' word like you use 'nigger' or 'fag'.

  • I've shared a few but a like button will be great!!! I was sharing some post with FB friends anyways... thanks!!  =D

  • If Xanga Team won't do anything about these trollings, then us Malaysians have no choice but to make an official complain to Xanga and highlight this matter in our newspapers.

  • @Star_x_Love - Show me a screen cap where I use a bad word.

  • @NikBv - Hah.... we posted the screencaps in Malaysian forums and social sites. Unless you can understand Malay and have account there, then you can see all the screencaps for yourself. Be happy, you are now famous in Malaysia as a troll. Congratulations to your fellow trolls.

  • @Star_x_Love - I'm honored. I want to thank the academy, and my mother and father, and of course my beautiful wife, who's always been there for me, and our kids, and my husband, for being my rock, and my aunt and uncle for all their wonderful birthday presents over the years, and of course, Jesus! For taking those nails in his palms so I didn't have to. You're the man, Jesus!

  • @NikBv - Yes, you can thank us Malaysians for making you famous. Without us, you are just a nobody in Xanga. Malaysians coined special nicknames for you :

    boneka, patung, badut, tunggul buruk

. As for Shimmerbodycream, they call her

Shimmerbodybag, minah laser, nenen, mami jarum

and many, many other insulting nicknames.

  • @Star_x_Love - You can't fool me, that's not a real language.

  • LOL can I leave a comment without being trolled by that multiple message person? I like this idea, but only wish you'd make the default NOT to do it. I hate having to change my settings to keep things the same, and I'd hate to miss an update and have the world see my Xanga. But it's great you guys are trying new things, thanks!

  • Can't we just "like" stuff on Xanga and IT STAYS HERE? Meaning, the likes are only for Xanga, and nothing gets linked to Facebook... Thanks, Xanga

  • @ShimmerBodyCream - Unfortunately, it is a real language... It's Malay (I'm Malaysian.) But I do not think of you using those words AT ALL.

  • @Scarlet_Lipstick - I think I must be the only Malaysian who doesn't think of those people as cyberbullies...

  • I just said no to it ;)

  • Now, if only it were easier to share my blog posts to Twitter.  I used that share feature and was disappointed when it disappeared.

  • @addyorable - If you won't support your own fellow Malaysian against trolls and cyberbullies, then you are not Malaysian enough.

  • @Star_x_Love - I never said I'm Bumiputera... and just because I'm not, doesn't mean I'm not Malaysian Sorry to burst your bubble.

  • @addyorable - Of course. The non-Bumiputera will support these trolls and cyberbullies because they lack the rights like us Bumiputeras. They are descendants of immigrants like most Americans.

You are not Malaysian enough, you won't support your fellow Malaysians when they are attack online.

If you are attack by these cyberbullies, you won't get support from us Malaysians.

  • If Xanga Team won't stop these trollings and cyberbullyings, you can bet 100% this matter will be brought to Facebook and the newpapers.

In Facebook, the minister of communication and multimedia is a member. Let him make a complain to Xanga for the online harassment against Malaysian citizens.

  • Cool. All the better for all my blog creepers who come from Facebook.

  • I like the fact that you and the team are providing 'options' to the rest of the community here.  Having 'options' by using the 'like' button provide flexibility - and I think that allows for more creative ability to express and share one's thoughts/posts and ideas across multiple platforms - and facebook being one of them.

Kudos to the team, I say.  And thanks.

  • @Rob_of_the_Sky - plug your blogs RSS feed through a 3rd party app that would update twitter.  I have my site set up that way to my twitter account - it's easy.  send me a message, I'll share how to do it.

I'd like to see a way to connect twitter and pulse, personally.

  • I wanted to thank your team for fixing the problems I was having selecting photos / images for use on my background and site headers.  I really appreciate your talents and your taking the time to do the fixes.  Becca

  • Can we have 'eject troll' button please?

  • @musterion99 - recommend is to share via the Xanga Network (to your friends/subs) - the 'like' button allows you to share to your facebook friends.

  • @Love_Rehab - hahah - yeah, it's called blocking the user. haha

  • I'm glad you have the option to have it or not have it, Personally i don't like FB much but it's always worth having the option there for those that do.

  • @edlives - Yeah, well, you see, I'm a Malaysian, and since there's been a series of attacks on Malaysians and their non-Malaysians friends lately, I'd love it  if we could have a button where we can permanently eject a troll from Xanga... you know like the James Bond's eject seat.

By the way, I'm new in Xanga.

  • I don't like this share page button on the chatbar. Whatever happen to respecting the Xangans' copyrights to their blogs? Now any non-Xangans can sneak off with our blogs and post them in other social websites. Plus I don't like Facebookers crawling all over Xanga.

    Xangans are for Xangans.

  • Is this going to be the same XFBML like button that I just put into my header only like 3 days ago?  Because I'm still upset that I can't put other widgets into my header any more since all the ad coding changed, and was thrilled to find code that would actually work.

    Like Button - Facebook Developers

  • @Love_Rehab - it's all good.  Yes, there's way's to set your site for:

    - sign-in lock (people have to be signed into Xanga to view content/comment)
    - block other users

So, there are options.  Welcome to the community - didn't realize you were new.

  • @edlives - I'm new but I'm active. I like the group dynamics. People are very passionate about things around here.

  • @Love_Rehab - the groups are very dynamic - good observation.

  • It's a good idea since basically everyone and their grandmother is on facebook, but I like keeping my xanga private from the facebook world, so thanks for the choice to opt out!!!

  • Thanks guys, for sharing this conductive accumulation.
