"Related Posts" for Everyone!
We just launched the "Related Posts" module for everyone!
We've been developing and testing this feature for a while on our own sites, and on some sites we've gotten it to the point where this one module drives over 10% of overall pageviews!
The technology behind this module is pretty straightforward, but it helps to understand how it works so that you can get the most out of it...
The "Related Posts" module uses two key inputs:
- Tags - the module uses tags to determine whether posts are related. If the module can't find any related posts based on tags, it simply shows a few of your recent posts.
On our sites, we've found that any post appearing in this module does get more clicks. But the posts that are truly related - based on tags - get a lot more clicks. So, if you haven't been tagging your posts, now is the time to get started! You don't have to think too hard about your tagging; just one or a few tags per post should be enough.
- Pictures* - people are more likely to click on pictures than text...
The "Related Posts" module takes advantage of this behavior by automatically grabbing a sample picture from each post to use in the module. Specifically, it grabs the first image inside each post (excluding non-content images like Xanga smileys) and turns it into a little thumbnail image inside the module. If your post has no images, it uses your profile picture. Even just the profile picture helps drive clicks, but a nice, unique image works much better.
So if you already use images in your posts, start putting your catchiest ones first. If you don't use images, you might want to consider adding at least one nice image to each post... or at the very least make sure you have a good profile pic!
*NOTE: the "Related Posts" module uses only Xanga-hosted images for now, but we're looking to add support for outside images too (in case you use other photo-hosting services) - we'll keep you posted on this one!
For those who don't want this new module, you'll find instructions for hiding it here:

Hope this helps everyone find more great posts!

<3. Thanks!
I like it.
Good addition, looks great
Well done guys.
I approve of this.
Fabulous
I kinda freaked out when it happened just as I refresh a page. I think it cool. Thanks.
Thanks! It made it easier, even for me, to find my posts.
nikbv already figured it out before you guys came out with it.
@ShimmerBodyCream - ha, yah nikbv had one of the test versions of the module
@marc - heeheehee
I love it. I just need to start uploading one photo per post to Xanga. =)
This is what I been wenting for, watch the post comes.
Excellent!
WOW! Related Pages! WHOOOW!
This means I have to find digital images. Damn the man. When will Xanga create a "Stock photo" gallery for users to choose from?

Want, want, want...
I know...
Sail on... sail on!!!
can I have my related posts link to AmericanAlien's page?
I didn't like it on MY site, so I got rid of it, good feature though!
I like!
Excellent - another fine update.
Reminds me of YouTube.
I likeyy!
Sounds good to me.
I find it annoying and distracting. Luckily there's an option to turn it off. Good feature though.
Hey Marc,
Great to see this update. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work correctly on those still on the older themes system; it only shows the thumbnails and no post text. I was really looking forward to it too!
On behalf of Mancouchers United, I thank you.
kinda reminds me of related videos on youtube
I think it is a great idea.
I noticed it a few days ago and was a bit surprised, in a good way, lol.
Thanks for doing this.
people should add me(:
Excellent addition, something that will drive more traffic and also helps as I read blogs I'm unfamiliar with.
Very good idea. It will definitely stimulate me to make more use of pictures in the future to add to my webblog.
I want a related comments feature so I know when people agree with me. That way I feel better about myself.
While editing a couple recent posts, I ended up changing images along the way, but the related posts module for those posts still show images for those posts that are no longer in the published posts. I even recopied one of those posts into a whole new post and republished it, and even then when it's listed as a related post to another post, it still shows the image from the original edit, even though that image is no longer in the published post. This seems odd to me. It's not a really big deal, but I'd prefer the images I end up choosing to show up in the related posts module. Thanks for your help!
can you add a random/recent post button on the homepage? It'd be like wikipedia or stumbleupon random button
I like that button
