  • Xanga Product Council

We mentioned last week that we'll be hosting a conversation on TheXangaTeam blog about different aspects of Xanga.

We would also like to have another set of conversations with you guys, this one over the phone and a bit more private. So we're inviting interested Xangans to apply for a 12-person Xanga Product Council that we'll be announcing later this month.

    What's involved?

    • You agree to hop on the phone with us once or twice over the next month.
    • We'll interview you about specific Xanga features, and get your feedback on what you like and what you'd don't.
    • Then we'll end with a free form chat where you can tell us the one site improvement you'd most like to see on the site!
    • Bonus points if you have Skype installed, and know how to do a screenshare.

We'll be selecting both Classic and Premium members for the Xanga Product Council. This first ever Council will be in session for one month. We'll be forming more councils over time, so if you don't get in on this one then there's always next time.

Interested? Just comment on this post within the next few days, and let us know why you should be on the council!

  • I can do this over skype with a screenshare, my phone is always on, and I want to do everything I can to make Xanga as kickass as it should be.

  • I don't use Skype often, but I do have it. I'd like to be involved. I don't know why I should be on the council, so I'll just say I should be on it because @Roadlesstaken is my girlfriend and he'll deactivate his account if you don't place me on the council.

  • You should ignore the advice of everyone on xanga.

Now, this is what you should.  You need to make xanga work more functionally with smart phones.  You need to strip down whatever features stand in the way of it.  You need to make it so xanga works better with smartphones than any other blogging platform.  Make it the smartphone blog.  It will drive up traffic.

Once again, ignore everyone else and their silly ideas.

  • You should pick me because I have silly ideas about features nobody wants.

  • I would like to apply to be on this council and would be very happy to talk over the phone or Skype.  Knowing me, I would probably travel to New York if you wanted to discuss things in person.  I feel NY is practically a second home now.

I've been pretty involved with the community over the past few years and have heard and seen a lot of things from the various groups on here.  I think I would be able to fairly reflect the views of many people on this site if asked to represent them.

  • @fLiPgUy31O - Ah, nothing like a good old ultimatum.

  • @Roadlesstaken - You know it, shnookums.

  • Good idea... although the first five times I read this I read it as "hop on a plane" not hop on the phone. I sincerely thought you were going to pay for plane tickets. This is still cool though.

  • Me me me!

    Why?
Because well... I build websites for a living now and I've been a long time user of Xanga since like forever... and you know how awesome I am :)
But seriously, I really do want to help! Let's make it happen.

  • @TheTheologiansCafe - I think you'll like some of our upcoming announcements.

  • Everytime user input is taken, people just end up complaining about the very same things they complained about not having once they get it. I've been saying this for a few years now, you've gotta focus on making Xanga optimized with mobile devices. Every xangan with a smartphone would use the site so much more. I'd upload more photos, pulse, and post if the site was more compatible with the little electronic device I carry on me 24/7.

And it can't just be a measly mobile version like what we have now. That site is too limited to want to use on a regular basis. It has to be a fully integrated site that gives you access yo every setting and feature available. Within the next two years, mobile devices are going to be the most commonly owned and used devices. Xanga has what it needs already to work well. That's been proven over and over again. The community is still strong. All you need to focus on is getting ahead of the game with the mobile site. To sound cliche, if you build it, they will come!

  • I'm interested.    Only thing is, I'm partially deaf, so it's a little difficult to talk to people on the phone.  I'm more than happy to correspond with email or text messaging, though.

  • make a page where u can actually hop in and see if ur friends are chatting and join the chat, like if  u were walking into a gameroom and seeing ur friends in person. u would also be able to get a feel of someone elses personalityand character if u can see them chatting. and maybe add a tab where you could play games while ur waiting on ur friends to pop in.

  •          um. we obviously need a "report spam" button for comments ^^^

  • This sounds really interesting. I'd be really interested in this, and I have Skype :D

  • Please fix the comment box in chrome and safari so that all paragraphs after the first one actually have paragraph breaks between them rather than just running together as a single paragraph. This is extremely annoying.

Also it would be really nice to have a WYSIWYG editor for webkit browsers that actually dynamically work rather than having to copy/paste code from a pop up.

  • I think I should be on because I posted my ass to Xanga, have only been IP banned once, and I always tell John how cute his kid is.

  • I should be on this council because I've been on Xanga since 2003 when I was in middle school. Same account. I still have the old layout bc I hate the new one. I'm pretty critical, picky, blunt, honest, I like things simple. I'll give you the exact feedback and tell it like it is. I run a blog on nearly every blog site yet xanga is weirdly my favorite still. I have a tumblr, wordpress, blogspot, and other social networking sites so I can compare and contrast the features to keep xanga updated and not ancient.

    pick me.doris

  • You should also have a forum for victims of harassment and cyberbullying around here. When individuals are being harassed or bullied by others on Xanga, they need your guidance and advice on what action to take other than flagging sites and blocking users. Flagging sites is useless, it doesn't stop the harassers from continuing their activities. The victims need immediate response from you people.

  • Comment captcha code doesn't shows up in Flock browser. I don't have problems with comment captcha code since I am a long time user, but the new Xangans are having problem commenting.

  • I would be down for this.

I think I should be part of this council because I am an official OG Xangsta.

  • You should do something about the video manager. It messes up good videos. People are forced to open Youtube accounts just to post videos on Xanga.

  • Xanga weblog editor won't allow me to write titles in Russian. Every single time when I write a blog in Russian and try to add a title, the editor cuts off my title. Please make it accept non-English words. Thank you.

  • Count me in!!!! Let's go Xanga!

  • Im 29, single, and like long walks on the beach.... mmmmmmmmmm if xanga wanted to take me out for a glass of wine and a lonnnnngggg conversation, Id play ;)

  • I would love to take part in this    the only problem is the time difference between UK and US

    Most cleaner themes

Or another suggest is you could do chat via Xanga TV

  • You should make an app for the smart phones I do have to agree with that.  But I also like xanga the way it is.  Too much change can ruin a good thing.

  • Always trying to make things better..thanks John.*.thanks to the whole team*...keep up the great work..take care all..love Lee

  • im interested :) tell me what i need to do!

  • I don't have Skype currently, because none of my real-life friends ever uses it but to make my home a better place I'd re-install it. I have a looong list about things that I think could be improved, from certain parts of the design to how the top-blogs are generated- I don't think it attracts new users if for example bitchy posts about the site itself are on the front-page. I also know what I like. I'm an active average user, who would like to improve things for others like myself. I dreamed of being in a Xanga council scince I'm 10 years old. (ok the last bit was exgerrated.)

I know you've been told this before...the first thing is you need to stop being so unorganized. That's how Xanga comes across to me sometimes. There are a ton of things that need improvement and very evidently so. You install new features because a few people scream loudly that they want them, but some glitches remain unsolved. Instead of making it so complicated and selecting 12 people, which is a difficult process if you wanna do it right, and taking the time to skype with them etc, why don't you just launch a democratic vote if you want user input? Just wondering, because I often thought Xanga should maybe let EVERYONE vote for a change.

I don't know who you are looking for exactly...people with business-sense, who maybe even know about this field? or just emotional Xanga-lovers like me, or a mix?  Maybe you should say it, so people know what to write and stay serious; after all you'll receive many "applications" and if this is about selecting the best ones it will be difficult, or you could give a "theme" to the councils...(you see I'm already throwing out advice ).

  • @reckless_eagle - I agree. We need protection from your lying "Malaysian" identities :D .

  • The WE Party is in!  WE recommend you add "Global Social Networking" to your list.

  • Sounds great! I wouldn't mind doing this as one of the oldest Xangans around. Okay, let me make sure I got this straight...

You agree to hop on the phone with us once or twice over the next month.

Can I hop on the phone twice a month? Absolutely.

We'll interview you about specific Xanga features, and get your feedback on what you like and what you'd don't.

I'm all about interviews. I have tons of experience! Wait... does questioning by police as a potential witness to a white collar crime count?

Then we'll end with a free form chat where you can tell us the one site improvement you'd most like to see on the site!

Oooo, anything with "free form" in it sounds like a party to me! Now I just have to think of the ONE site improvement I'd most like to see.

Bonus points if you have Skype installed, and know how to do a screenshare.

I do have Skype. But I won't tell you if I know how to do screenshare until you indicate exactly how many bonus points are in play.

  • Why should I be included? lol If I had to answer that one fully I'd be typing next month.

I can use Skype, have moderate (lol) knowledge of the old Xanga, and the newer versions, have screenshot software, and can get you some ideas from my readers for lots of things that us 'old skool' types would love to see.

  • Me! Because I've been a xanga test rat before and enjoyed it. Plus, we go way backk, Xanga, way back!

  • I'd be happy to be a part of this. I've been working with Xanga since mid-2004 and still enjoy the platform for its simplicity and general ease of use. I have Skype, can do screenshots, and would be more than willing to share a few opinions.

  • Been on Xanga since 2004 and I am true and premium. I would like to participate...I will represent the voice of the older more established Xangan. I can also give a perception from a person outside of Xanga's normal market...because I live in South Africa. As a bonus, I am an Information management professional and might be able to give you a few tips for truly doing something significant for Xanga that is not available on any other social networking site. It is not about me....but about Xanga and the opportunity to put something back into the community.

  • I'd be interested in this. I'll post something related to this topic when I get a chance.

  • awesome idea.  But I don't Skype =(

  • I would offer, but being a person with dial-up internet, no cellphone *at all*, no knowledge of what Skype is, and a constant use of functions within Xanga which you deem 'obsolete', I don't really think you want me.  I fear for what this council will result in.  John's last post mentioned a 'state of the union'-esque address that would go back to the heart of blogging and leave off the diversification that has muddied the waters hereabouts.  I sincerely hope you all mean it.

  • -shrug- I wouldn't mind contributing to this. It's been a long while since I've done anything of decent value on Xanga. I've been a part of the community for 7 years off-and-on taking part in contests, hosting sites, even teaching others how to deal with trolling or entertaining them with unique satires, poetry, and short stories.

I've also been one of the harshest critics of various formats/editors/users on Xanga, as well as helped present in-depth analyses of trending events on the Xangasphere (more-so in the last year or so). In the 7 years I've come into a more sane, stable, and level-headed attitude and mindset, giving me both a strong eye for improvement as well as the ability to express my thoughts maturely and coherently in a way that benefits the people around me.

I have Skype, can do video logging, screen-sharing, screen capping, video editing, can FaceTime (iPod Gn.4), or even do phone calls.

  • Would love to give a little input but, I don't think I would be available at the right times due to a strange work schedule.  I would like to take this opportunity to say the smart phone emphasis is only a part of what makes a good site and I would not put all of my eggs in one basket.  Not everyone is constantly plugged into their iphone/crackberry.

  • What would be really cool is if Xanga were to release a downloadable open-source CMS similar to WordPress.

Or is WordPress already the 800-gorilla in the CMS market, making such a move not worth it to Xanga management?

  • I like Xanga, and I have Skype. I'm a loyal user for the past 4 years who can give you a computer moron's point of view. I too, am True and Premium, and am available at almost any hour of the day.

I can also teach you about good Canadian beer.

  • Ahhh, so we're supposed to apply here in a comment xD Forgot about that the first time I commented lol.

I've been on Xanga since December 2004 and have seen the changes. I'm a daily blogger and a very active user. I've got Skype and can screen-shot and screen-share. At the moment I have no job (looking) so I can definitely be available to chat on a phone at any time. I may not be computer-savvy, but I know what I like and don't like about the features here.

I love Xanga and the community here (minus trolls, of course lol) which is why I hope to be able to buy the LIFE badge. I would be so happy to be a part of this process of improving a site I already love.

  • I've been with Xanga for over 10 years now, and I'll admit to dabbling in other blogging platforms during that time. I feel like at this point, I know what I do like about Xanga and what I'd like to see from Xanga. Also, Skype is fun!

  • I'm down with this. :)   give a call.

  • I'd be willing to give my input.

  • I do wish you guys would fix it so that when we block a person, we no longer see ANYTHING they wrote. Even if our friends we have not blocked for some crazy reason thought it worthy of a rec.

  • Oh, and one more thing. I think it would be really extremely wonderful if you all made something like the old suhock tracker thing, so we could keep up with who is watching us better than the footprints. If you are going to allow the same IP address to make fifty different Xanga sites who all argue with themselves, it would be a lot easier for those of us who would rather "argue" with real people.

  • I want to be included.

  • I should be on the council because:

    - I've been here since 2003
    - I bought LIFE
    - I'm TRUE
    - I'm awesome

  • If you still have need of people I am interested.

  • Pick me. I need the app to work so I can keep using xanga on a daily basis. I promise if there is a bug, I will find it. My sole entertainment now is playing "what can I do on my phone" and with this site and the mobile app being my numero uno time sink, if you don't put me on the product council, chances are I will tell you exactly what the app issies are anyway.

  • I don't have a smart phone - but this is how I access the internet from my phone.

  • Are you guys ever going to incorporate an
"ignore" function?  I'd love to have the ability to never see certain
bloggers again, or any rec's or comments shared affiliated with said
    blogger cluttering up my feed.
